Ladies Aid Gets Report on Supper
Served to Sunday School Teachers
The May meeting of the Lutheran
Ladies Aid was well attended with
Mrs. Bert Klopp as chairlady for
the devotions. Two hymns "Gold-
en Harps Are Sounding" and "Bles-
sed Father, Great Creator" were
sung, followed by the responsive
reading of Psalm 27. Miss Ruth
Haberer favoured with a beautiful
piano solo.
The president, Mrs. A. Fink-
biener, took charge of the business.
Mrs. J. Turkheim gave a report
on the supper served to the Sun-
day School Teachers at their con-
vention, which was held in the
church on Sunday, May 3. Some
of the profit realized from this sup-
per will be given to the Junior
Choir to complete the cost of their
new choir gowns.
Mrs. Herb Klopp, on behalf of
the Sunday School teachers, ex-
pressed a vote of thanks to the
ladies for the supper and the ac-
commodations given to the guests
which arrived on Saturday.
An invitation was extended to
all the ladies of the church to at-
tend the meeting of the Women's
Institute on Thursday, May 14, in
the Town Hall.

Modern Etiquette
Q. When someone whom you
have just met says, "I am so glad
to have met you, "isn't a smile of
acknowledgement sufficient?
A. No; this would seem to have
a condescending air about it. It
is much better to accompany the
smile with a "thank you."
Q. When a man is in the ele-
vator of an office building, and a
woman acquaintance enters,
should he remove his hat?
A. He should lift his hat in
greeting, but etiquette does not
require that he remove his hat in
a business elevator.
Q. Does a person really have
to give a reason for declining an
invitation?
A. This would seem much better
than an abrupt "no." If one were
merely to say, "No," I can't come,"
it would indicate a lack of apprec-
iation of the invitation, and even
an unwillingness to continue the
friendship.

CANADA'S manufacturing industry began to grow
significantly about 80 years ago when the people
decided that more of their needs should be provided
from Canadian factories.
Today manufacturing is the most important ele-
ment in the Canadian economy. It provides nearly
half of all employment; it pays high taxes; and it is
the greatest contributor to our national production.
Manufacturing will continue to provide Canadians
with the world's second highest standard of living
if the people of Canada will Buy Canadian.

rr Still Top Public Health Menace
Warns Beck Sanatorium Doctor
While progress is being made,
tuberculosis continues to be the
number one public health menace
in Canada, Dr. William Sharpe,
superintendent of Beck Sanatori-
um told members of the Huron
County Tuberculosos Association,
The occasion was the annual meet.
ing of the association which fol-
lowed dinner in Armstrong's Rest-
aurant, Exeter, on Monday even-
ing, April 27.
The danger in the disease is
the apathy with which it is re-
garded by the public. TB kills
more people that the total of all
other infectious diseases, with the
exception of influenza, Although
the death rate has decreased, there
are almost as many admissions
today to sanatoriums as in the
past. At the moment, admissions
are at the rate of ten per day in
Ontario, Dr. Sharpe said.
The speaker placed emphasis on
the necessity of continued testing
as a means of prevention. Recent
trends in planning programs of TB
prevention give tubercular testing
an important place, he said. It is
clear that if the entire population
were given a tubercular skin test,
some 30 percent would show in-
fection, although in only five per-
cent would the disease become ap-
parent.
