Modern Etiquette
Q. How does one properly signal
the waiter in a hotel or club dining
room that he is ready to have his
plate removed from the table?
A. The knife and fork, placed
side by side on the plate, indicates
that one .has finished that partic-
ular course.
Q. When the bride is being mar-
ried in a travelling dress, what
should the bridegroom wear?
• A. An ordinary business suit, or
one that is appropriate for travel-
ling, with perhaps a little white
flower from the bride's corsage in
his lapel,
Q. Are desserts always eaten
with the fork ?
A. This depends uopn the des-
sert. Some are just too soft to be
handled with the fork. A good rule
to follow is to use your fork when-
ever possible—but use good judg-
ment, too.
Q. If a man and woman are
walking together during a rain,
and both have umbrellas, does
each one use his own umbrella?
A. This usually proves awkward.
It is much better if both walk un-
der the man's larger umbrella.
Q. Is a bereaved person supposed
to return all calls of condolence?
A. No; this is neither required
nor expected.

Problems With Whitewash? Here are
Some Suggestions to Help You
New developments in structures
have solved many faun building
problems, but the problem of
cleanliness is common to all farm
buildings, old or new. And one of
the best aids to cleanliness—and
and easy way of increasing the
amount of light available—is good
old-fashioned whitewash.
But if you've run into trouble
with whitwash chalking and rubb-
ing in your stable, take OAC en-
gineer H. E. Wright's advice: use
a stiff brush and a wet cloth or
hose on the old .whitewash before
applying the new.
Explains Wright: "The brush re-
moves the old scales and flakes
and the washdown takes off the
dirt and grease. The surface should
be damp when you're applying the
whitewash so that (like concrete)
it will dry slowly; otherwise, ch-
alking and rubbing will occur."
He suggests putting on the wh-
itewash with either a brush or sp-
rayer. Use a wide brush and don't
attempt "brushing out" as with
paints. Lay on a thin coat so that
it dries opaque. If you intend to
use a sprayer, stir in the white-
wash through a few layers of ch-
eesecloth or a strainer to take
out coarse flecks which might plug
the sprayer jet. CIean the sprayer
when you're finished,
For a mixture that will cover
200 square feet per gallon, try
Wright's system: First, make up a
cream of one bag of hydrated lime
and seven gallons of water several
days before you're ready to Work.
Next, dissolve six pounds of salt in
three gallons of boiling water and
mix the two solutions when they're
both cold. Then, stir three pounds
of Portland cement into the final
mixture.
