Federation Directors Suggest Cancer
Campaign Worthy of Support
(By J. Carl
Huron County Federation of Ag-
riculture Directors met in the Ag-
ricultural Office Board Rooms Ap-
ril 15, with president Winston
Shapton presiding. The attendan-
ce was particularly good, which is
appreciated.
Envoy Newman of the Salvation
Army spoke briefly on the work
of the Army in the County. He
expressed the highest appreciation
for the canvass undertaken by the
township Federations of Agricul-
ture last year. I -Ie pointed out
that all moneys collected by can-
vasses conducted by organizations
must be spent on welfare work
only. Two thirds, at least must
be spent in the area in which it is
collected.
It was felt that as a County
the federation couldn't conduct
such a canvass but it was recom-
mended that the townships take
on this job. Perhaps the ladies
committee would be able to do the
canvassing.
In discussing the Focus on the
Farm program the meeting agreed
to purchase four shares, the same
as last year. It was suggested that
a meeting of the share holders be

arranged as they might be of as-
sistance in gathering local mater-
ial for the program.
The annuaLworship service pro-
gram was discussed and a com-
mittee was set up to arrange the
details.
Mrs. Gordon Greig, newly elec-
ted chairman of Ontario Farm
Forum, stated that a banquet was
being arranged for the participants
on TV Farm Forum in appreci-
ation of their work, and a donation
was granted..

Twenty neighbours and friends
presented her with a miscellaneous

In Ontario, the common white
sucker (Catostomus commerson:-
nii) occurs in almost all lakes and
rivers from the Great Lakes to
Hudson Bay. In Northern Canada
it is distributed from the Macken-
zie River, Hudson Bay and Lab-
rador to the Maritime Provinces
and, in the United States, south-
ward on both sides of the Appal-
achians to Georgia, Arkansas and
Colorado.
Angling for suckers with light
tackle is an interesting pastime.
The gear necessary is simple, con-
sisting of pole, line, light leader,
split shot sinker, and a single
hook, No. 6 or No. 8. A variety
of bait may be used such as grubs,
worms and night crawlers. Con-
siderable recreational interest in
legalized disp-netting is evident
during the spring run of suckers.
In Ontario, licensed commercial
fishermen and anglers are encour-
aged to harvest the crop of suck-
ers. This is desirable because of
the tendency of suckers to over-
populate areas where predators
are lacking, and because of the
habit of the sucker to compete with
game fish for food items of prim-
ary importance for growth.
There is no restriction on the
number and size of suckers that
may be taken by licensed commer-
cial fishermen or by anglers. Dur-
ing the months of March, April
and May, between the hours of
sunrise and sunset, a resident may
take suckers for personal use by
means of a dip net six feet wide,
except in Algonquin Park, Kaw-
artha Lakes and certain other
specified areas. And, during the
months of April and May, between
the hours of..sunrise and sunset, a
resident may take suckers for per-
sonal use by means of a spear, ex-
cept in Algonquin Park, Kawar-
tha Lakes, Lake Simcoe and cer-
tain
ertain other specified areas.
Average rate of growth is as fol-
lows: One year, four inches; two
years, seven inches; three years,
ten inches; four years, 13 inches;
five years, 15 inches; eight years
19 inches. Only occasional speci-
mens exceed 18 inches and the av-
erage weight attained is one to
two pounds.

CHARLES ANXIETY 8M POLLED
Top priced bull at the Ontario Bull Sale held early in March.
The reason he brought the top price is because he has excellent
conformation and his official rate of gain while on test for 168
clays was 3.09 lbs. per day, for life time 2.97 lbs. per day,
and he finished his test period weighing 1,280 lbs, This is the
highest lifetime gain and finishing weight of any bull perform-
ance tested in Ontario to date.
