(Citizens News Photo) Chamber 'Welcomes Three Members; Discuss High School for the District At the regular dinner meeting of the Zurich •and Didtrict Chamb- er of Commerce, held in the Do- minion Hotel last Wednesday night, three new members were voted into membership in the or- ganization. The three are Douglas Robinson, Clarence Farewell, and Albert CIausius. Official induction ceremonies willtake place at the next meeting. A lengthy discussion took place at the meeting in regards to a proposed high school for Zurich. It was the feeling of members that a delegation should arange a meet- ing with the Minister of Educa- tion, at Toronto. Also under discussion at the meeting was the proposal of the Chamber to the village in regards to the opening of a new street M the east part of the village, Albert Kalbfleisch and Jack. Bannister reported on the work of the Public Relations commit- tee. Mr. Bannister also described the progress being made with the Pee Wee hockey team, which is sponsored by the Chamber. Chairman of the bingo commit- tee, Charles Thiel, gave a report on the weekly bingos being held in the Community Centre. Car Stolen From 'earson's Lot A car was stolen from the lot of Pearson Motors in Zurich some time over the past weekend. A 1955 model Chevrolet, the car was last seen by employees on Sat- urday afternoon. It is reported to be in very good condition. OPP Constable Cecil Gibbons, of the Exeter detachment, is investi- gating the theft. It is thought the thieves will have considerable trouble going far with the automo- bile since they do not have the ownership licence for the vehicle, and it had old licence plates on it, meaning that after Wednesday they will not be able to use it. The keys had been removed from the Car on Saturday night at closing time. Bingo Winners Frid.. y Night Winners at the regular weekly bingo in the Zurich Community Centre last Friday night were: Louis Willert, Mrs. Lorne Rader, Mrs, Leonard Debus, Mrs. Nor- man Fleischauer, Ross Fisher, Louisa Rarich, Jack Yungblut, Mrs. William Davidson, Earl Neeb, and Karl Haberer. There was still no winner for the jack- pot. Next week the jackpot will be $55 in 56 calls. Village Trustees Take No Action On Land fiurehase The Village Trustees at their regular meeting last Tuesday night filed a request from the Zurich Chamber of Commerce to purch- ase land from Norman Gascho. The Chamber had suggested pur- chase of this former Zimmerman property for the purpose of event- ually opening a new street to the east part of the village. In other business the council instructed secretary H. W. Brok- enshire to contact the public school inspector in regards to what effect incorporation would have on the school area. Members of the councilexpect there will be little effect. The trustees granted permission $2.50 Per Year -12 Pages Co -Op Sales Hit High of $601,328.00, Members Dine 'at Community Hall Sales of the Hensall District Co - Operative for the past year set a new all-time high, it was revealed at the organization's annual meet- ing, which was held in the Com- munity Centre, Zurich, last Thurs- day evening. The total amount of sales was $601,328, which is an increase of $80,000 over last year. The annual meeting was in the form of a hot turkey banquet, which was catered to by the Lad- ies' Aid of the Lutheran Church. President of the Co-op, Russell Grainger, was ' the chairman for the evening. While the total sales showed an increase for the year, the gross margin was also increased by $72,- 917 to $80,891. The total assets of the company also showed an in- • crease to the amount of $25,000. In a break -down of the gross mar- gin it was shown that the Zurich branch had the largest margin, $26,370, compared to $21,481 for the Hensall branch, and $13,545 for the Brucefield branch. The net savings for the year was $36,926. The am al statement was pre- sented to the meeting by William Harvey, Goderich, the area super- visor of the United Co-operatives of Ontario, who was introduced by Garnet Mousseau, manager of the Hensall depot. Director's Report The report of the directors was presented by Allen Armstrong who said they were happy to have such efficient managers at each of the branches, He told of the company having to buy new trucks this past year, at a considerable expense. At Brucefield they sold the old house, which was on the Co-op property, for $100, and they had received $4,500 from the De- partment of Highways for the land. A new storage warehouse to have town water installed at the home being remodelled by Earl Gingerich (former Weido property) . was also built at Brucefield, where, the directors felt, real progress is being shown since they purchased the plant from J. K. Cornish. Mr. Armstrong told how they had been thinking of a fertilizer mixing plant, but thought it best to wait for awhile before going ahead with this project. He also explained that the biggest prob- lem facing the directors today is the amount of accounts receivable. Describing the year as a very successful one, the directors re- commended a five per cent divi- dend on patronage, which was en- dorsed by the members. Glen Weido, RR 1, Zurich, was elected as a director for a three- year term, replacing Orland Reich- ert, eichert, who has held the position for six years, as long as it is possible to hold the office. George Clifton, Brucefield, was re-elected for an- other 'three-year term as director. Other directors are: Russel Grainger, Zurich; Bert Klopp, Zur- ich; Alex McGregor, Kippen; Al- len Armstrong, Varna; Lloyd Walper, Dashwood and Alex Mc - Beath, Kippen. About 325 people were present for the evening. Entertainment was provided in the way of a comedy play, acted out by mem- bers of the Unique Farm Forum. A sing -song was led by Delbert Geiger, with Mrs.'°`B'eatrice Hess at the piano. Guests at the head table, who were introduced by Alex McGreg- or, Kippen, 'included: Mr. and Mrs. George Clifton, Brucefield; Mr, and Mrs. William Harvey, Gode- rich; Mr. and Mrs. Garnet Mous- scan, Hensall; Mr, and Mrs. Bert Klopp, Zurich; Mr. and Mrs. Rus- sel Grainger, Zurich; Mr. and Mrs. Alec McBeath, Kippen; Mr. and Mrs. Allen Armstrong, Varna; Mr. and Mrs. Orland Reichert, Hen - sail; Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Walper, Dashwood; Mr. and Mrs. Ray Mc - Nall, Brucefield; Mr. and Mrs, R. E. Shaddick, Hensall; and Mr. and Mrs, Ken Hern, Exeter. A dance rounded out the even- ing's program.
