Your Purchases of Easter Seals Provide
Orthopaedic Services for Crippled Kids
During the past year, leading
physicians and surgeons from hos-
pitals that specialize in orthopaed-
ic services attended numerous clin-
ics held at strategic locations thr-
oughout Ontario for the benefit
of crippled youngsters.
The out -clinic service provided
by the far flung facilities of the
Ontario Society for Crippled Ch-
ildren has developed under the
closely related co-operation be-
tween the Society and the 221
service clubs which each year con-
duct this Easter Seal Campaign
to finance assistance to help crip-
pled children, In addition to help
finance the treatment of crippled
children from their communities,
the service clubs help with the cli-
nics by transporting youngsters
and helping to provide accommod-
ation for those than cannot return
home immediately.
The Society and the service
clubs organize the clinics under a
medical committee which enrols
the volunteer specialists. The lat-
ter include literally every top sp-
ecialist in the fields of medicine
and surgery which are necessary
Girl Guide News
(By Ruth Clausius)
The Zurich Girl Guides held
their regular weekly meeting last
Thursday evening in the Town
Hall.
After the meeting a court of
honour was held, at which time
it was decided the Guides would
go around town on March 21 and
collect empty pop bottles, coat
hangers, and six quart baskets.
The money raised from this pro-
ject will go towards a camp for
the Guides this summer.
Stanley 'Council
Supports CDCI
School Addition
Stanley Township councillors a-
greed at this meeting last Monday
afternoon, to support the board
of Clinton District Collegiate In-
stitute, in the proposed $325,000
addition to the school building,
with two provisions.
Their approval is based on the
provision that the board use the
present gymnasium for a cafeteria,
and that they receive a grant of
$25,000 for that purpose.
Tenders for the warble fly cam-
paign were opened, and William
Hayter was named inspector. Hu-
bert Cooper will do the spraying.
After interviewing Reeve Ivan
Forsyth, one councillor and Clerk
E. P. Chesney of Tuckersmith
Township, Stanley agreed to pay
the neighbouring municipality the
sum of $92.36 in settlement of
agreement over Brumfield street-
light expense.
The clerk was instructed to ap-
ply to the Department of Public
Works for subsidy on the Stanley
Big Drain, and also to call for
tenders on 6,000 yards of gravel
for the township roads in 1959.
FINED UNDER CTA
(Exeter Times -Advocate)
Mrs. Evelyn Field, 58, Hensall,
was fined $50 and costs Wednes-
day after pleading guilty to keep-
ing intoxicating liquor for sale,
contrary to the CTA.
Crown Attorney H. G. Hays,
QC, revealed 1,102 pints of beer
had been confiscated during a raid
February 20 when six persons
were found in the Maitland Club,
Main Street, Hensall.
Mrs, Field's husband, alleged to
be the owner of the club, is in. St.
Joseph's hospital, London, suffer-
ing from, a broken hip received
in a recent auto accident. He was
previously convicted in connection
with a bottle club at St, Joseph.
The crown said police had re-
ceived no complaints that young-
sters were patronizing the club.
PC Cecil Gibbons, in charge of
the February raid,,.. was the. only
witness.
to the children's betterment. These
doctors come from Toronto, Otta-
wa, Hamilton and other cities loca-
ted' ile4r: the clinic 'centre.
Plans for a clinic are laid well
in advance, Through local officers
of health, public health nurses and
local doctors, the Society's field
nurses locate and visit crippled
children, report their needs and
plan their attendance at clinic,
On a planned day, for instance,
children from hundreds of miles
around a community 'such as Kirk-
land Lake will gather there. To
meet them will be specialists in
orthopaedic surgery and other br-
anches of medicine who, together
with local doctors, diagnose their
conditions and prescribe treatment.
If the latter can be provided local-
ly, the lomil doctor then supervises
it; if treatment is required in' a
big city hospital, arrangements are
made for transportation and hos-
pitalization by .the Society.
Over the years, thousands of
children have attended such clin-
ics, have received treatment and
have benefitted from the follow;
up program, provided by the Soc-
iety's nursirig'services. A score of
nurses specially, trained in ortho-
paedics follow up, every case, teach
the mother how to carry on the
therapy prescribed by the doctors
and see that anything required
such as braces or crutches are
provided for the children.
For the 1959 Easter Seal Cam-
paign, which is held from Febru-
ary 26th to March 29th, there is
a minimum of $770,000 needed to
carry on this and other services.
