(Citizens News Photo) NIL Referees Have Lonely Life, Salaries Good But Razzing Plentiful Few occupations are lonelier than that of the. National Hockey Lea- gue's six referees, Tom Alderman reported today in Liberty maga- zine. "They rarely spend more than two or three days a month at homeduring a hockey season;' live in lonely hotel rooms; and tra- vel 25,000 miles on planes, trains and buses. They can't consort with players, club officials or question- able characters. Mostly they con- sole themselves with the 'words of one retired official, "Don't worry about it, boys, There must be a heaven for referees, because they sure catch enough hell on earth". NHL referees earn from $6,000 to $11,00 a season. They live on a fat expense account work only five or six hours a week. "But, on the ice they're alone in a crowd of 15,000 second guessers," writes Alderman. Only the best referee can take the stormy criticism heaped on them by fans and officials. Referee Red Storey has his own philosophy about hockey's most thankless job; "As long as they give me the raspberry. I know I'm doing my job and I'm eating steak. When they quit it'll be hamburg- er." Occasionally razzing by fans does have its humorous side. For years, one fan has been trying to land a live octupus on an of- ficials pate. Recently, he outfitted it with a pocket size parachute before sending it ice -ward. Once after a New York game, Ranger fans presented Red Storey with a gift: "in appreciation of your fine work." The package contained a huge cork with the inscription, "for the hole in your head." Carl Voss became chief referee nine years ago. It's his job to hire and train suitable men as referees. Said Voss, "The best referees are those with the thickest menta) hides. They can impose their will completely over players and fans, yet give the impression they're not doing it". Police Chief Fred Minshall and Sgt. Charles Anderson, of the local OPP detachment, went to Peter- borough Sunday to bring Michael Anthony Gouland, 19, back to Hu- ron County Jail. Gouland, of no fixed address, is charged with stealing Harold Shore's car in Goderich on Febru- ary 11. More than 900 miles had. been put on the car from the time it was taken until it was recovered by Peterborough OPP detachment on February 22.
