Citizens News, Zurich, Ontario, Dear Sir: Recently there has been some discussion about forming another high school area in the vicinity of Zurich, which would include parts of Hay, Stanley and Stephen township. Your editor asked for an opinion from a Stanley town- ship resident, As I live hi the south west area of Stanley, I think it would be an excellent idea, but it will take a considerable amount of effort on the part of those people interest- ed. From our point of view there are quite a number of reasons why we should have another high school. The Clinton school is over -crow- ded, and building another addition to it is not the best way to remedy the situation. The basic unit at Clinton was built for 200-300 stu- dents. About four years ago there was an addition built and plans are under way for another add - tion, but no matter how many ooms are built the original school s not designed for additions, and with 500 or more pupils every- hing is over crowded. Even with he new addition a commercial ourse could not be taken till the ourth year because of lack of oom and facilities. This is what appens when a school is over rowded. We will take History for an ex- ple, the teacher has 38 pupils ome in to history class, when ey are through another 38 or 40 ome in and when they in turn go t, another 35 or 40 come in and e teacher is supposed to have the me enthusiasm for the last class for the first and this takes ace in History, English, Math, c. Then there is the distance from hool to contend with. We have pils that ride 25 to 35 miles school. For some students this ans being at the road as early 7.15 or 7.30 and two and a half nths of this is on daylight time, we believe that another high ool would solve a lot of prob- s, not just for us in this area also in the Clinton and Exeter as, and aII three schools would able to provide more commerc- and vocational training and we Id also get more students ough upper school. It is a wn fact that smaller high ools graduate a higher per- tage of students than do the er high schools which have an ollment of over 500 or more. o if we are to have another school, this is the year we t go after it and if the Rep- ent of Education is really in- wa t t c f r h c am c th c ou th sa as p1 et sc pu to me as mo So seh lem but are be ial wou thr kno sch cen larg enr S high mus artm terested in raising the standard of education they will have to give us their utmost consideration. Much more could be said on this subject, but I do not wish to im- pose further on the generosity of the Editor. GORDON ERB Dear Sirs: In regards to dancing in the Community Centre in Zurich, you hear a lot of talk, "Why aren't the dances in our town a success ?" I am just a local farmer living not far from Zurich. I have been attending all the dances quite reg- ularly, in fact I have missed only two of them. And what stands out most is that you don't see any of the sponsors there themselves. For example, some friends and myself quite recently went danc- ing in a neighboring village, and there, lo and behold, who did we see but a few of the good spon- sors of the Lions Club dances, Now if that doesn't stand out in the public among your own peon pie what does ? On Friday, Jana uary 30 I looked in the door at the Community Centre, and saw only a few people there, but none of the sponsors. Oh pardon me, there were two of them there grab,. bing the money. If that is patronizing your own town, I don't see it. Please don't leave it to a few farmers to sup- port your dances. If you people can't come, don't look for us to come. We have had nothing but the best of music, so what is the trouble? Come on citizens, show us where we stand, and don't let a few outsiders think they have to keep your dances going. Show them your stuff, let's see some crowds, eh! (Signed) • —AN INTERESTED FARMER EVENTIDE AND ROCK of AGES MEMIIffl LS INQUIRIES ARE INVITED T.
