Brucellosis Now In
Alberta's Elk, Deer
Reports reaching the Ontario
Veterinary College indicate that
Brucellosis has been found in bis-
on, elk, and moose in the province
of Alberta. The significance of
these findings is one which cannot
be under -estimated.
The report states that the dis-
ease affects moose severely and
the indications are that it inevi-
tably terminates in death. Bison,
which are for the most part kept
in special game reserves do not
appear to present a serious pro-
blem as spreaders. Elk and deer
and other wild animals may, how-
ever, contribute to the spread of
the disease in certain areas.
Spread of brucellosis through
wild animals is an unknown quan-
tity; however, according to the
Ontario Veterinary College, it
could explain some of the isolated
outbreaks that occur in herds that
have been brucella free for years.
