Total operating costs for public hospitals in 1957 amounted to $135,117,299 an increase of $16,- 360,679 over 1956. Total revenue from patients, Blue Cross, and oth- er repayment plans came to $109,- 698,344. This represents an in- crease over 1956 of $13,356,827. Another sizable jump was in the total salaries and wages paid to hospital staffs. At $94,546,519, this figure was $12,152,209 high- er than in 1956.
