months of this year, 33 new pro-
jects were approved and more
than 50 others entered the plan-
ning stage. By the end of 1958,
the Commission estimates that
there will be a total of 30,790 beds
in the 205 public hospitals of the
province, compared with 16,429
beds and 162 hospitals in 1947.
Coinciding with the start of On-
tario Hospital Insurance, the num-
ber of public hospitals will be rais-
ed again in January 1, 1959 to 206
with the opening of the brand new
28 -bed Uxbridge Cottage Hospital.
Total operating costs for public
hospitals in 1957 amounted to
$135,117,299 an increase of $16,-
360,679 over 1956. Total revenue
from patients, Blue Cross, and oth-
er repayment plans came to $109,-
698,344. This represents an in-
crease over 1956 of $13,356,827.
Another sizable jump was in the
total salaries and wages paid to
hospital staffs. At $94,546,519,
this figure was $12,152,209 high-
er than in 1956.
