Neighbour Communities' Elections Chamber's Re c uest
Select Some New Men and Women
Monday was election day in
many of the surrounding munici-
palities, and in some cases changes
were made from previous years.
}Iensall
In Hensall the present reeve
Norman Jones was re-elected to
the office, defeating his challenger,
Gordon Schwalm, by a vote of 190
to 173.
There are three new faces on
the council in Hensall. Leading
the race was a popular Hensall
businessman, Lorne Hay, who
polled a total of 317 votes. Next
in line was John Henderson, with
269. Mrs. Minnie Noakes was the
first woman to be elected to the
Hensall council, gaining a total
of 171 votes. The fourth member
elected to the council was John
Baker, with 145 votes.
Stephen Township
Glen Webb was elected to the
office of reeve of Stephen Town-
ship, defeating his opponent, Well-
ington Hoist, by a majority of 225
votes. Mr. Webb polled 624 votes
to Mr. Heist's 399. The three risen
elected to the council were: Ed
Hendriclz 714, James Hayter 710,
and Steve Dundas 515, Elmer
Lawson was the defeated candid-
ate in Stephen.
Grand Bend
In the village of Grand Bend
four out of six candidates were
elected to the council. Leading
the race was Wellwood Gill, with
218 votes, Next was William Stur-
devant 195, William Cochrane 157,
and John Manore 154. Defeated
in the contest at Grand Bend were
Eric McIllroy and David Jackson.
William Love and Campbell
Chapman were elected to the Pub-
lic Utilities Commission in the
popular summer resort.
New Hospital -School Included In
Ontario's Winter Work Program
The Citizens News office re-
ceived the following announcement
from C. S. MacNaughton, M,P.P.,
Exeter, regarding the new hospital
school:
"I have been authorized to an-
nounce on behalf of the Honorable
Mr. James N. Allan, Minister of
Public Works, that a winter work
project is to be undertaken at once
on the site of the proposed Hos-
pital -School for Retarded Children
on Highway No. 21, three miles
south of Goderich.
"This work will be undertaken
at this time in line with the Ont-
ario Governments overall policy of
providing as much assistance in
the form of winter employment
as possible.
"The program of work will pro-
vide for a general clean-up of the
site including removal of old fen-
ces, brush, trees with the excep-
tion of certain large ones. Also
any buildings which are unfit for
use by the department will be
torn down and the materials stor-
ed for either future use or sale
by tender.
"Study and investigation will be
carried out toward the careful as-
sessment of any and all prelimin-
ary work which may be required
or appear desirable on the hospit-
al site such as tentatively staking
out proposed buildings, prelimin-
ary land drainage, etc., all with a
view to executing as much work
as possible during the winter mon-
ths.

Held 'Till 1959
The December meeting of the
Hay Township council was held
in the town hall on Monday after-
noon, with all members present.
At the meeting a brief was read
to the council from the Zurich and
District Chamber of Commerce,
requesting that the council change
their plans for turning the town
hall into municipal offices. The
brief further requested the council
to erect a new building on one of
the main streets in the village.
After considerable discussion the
matter was held over until the
first meeting in the new year.
Joseph Hoffman, representing
the Federation of Agriculture, and
Don Oke, representing the Lions
Club, were officially appointed to
the Hay Township Community
Centre board.
A donation of $5 was made to
the War Memorial Children's Hos-
pital in London.
The council authorized road
superintendent James Masse to
purchase 500 feet of new snow
fence.
A refund is to be made to Ch-
arles Minshall for a portion of
business tax he had paid..

TURKEY RAFFLE HERE
The Holy Name Society of St.
Boniface Parish in Zurich are stag-
ing a turkey raffle in the town
hall on Friday night, December 5.
There will be plenty of large tur-
keys on hand.
An added attraction of the event
will be a door prize, which is to
be a 35 pound live turkey, all
dressed up with Christmas decora-
tions.
