NewRules to Control Brucellosis,
Huron May Move Towards Program
Gradually more and more coun-
ties are being included in a plan
whereby they become Brucellosis
Control Areas. Though Huron has
so far not been included, it is an-
ticipated that plans for this will
go forward shortly. There are four
counties in Ontario, now qualify-
ing under the plan.
It is of interest, then, for farm-
ers in this area to know quite a
bit about the plan. Need for it
has increased with changes in reg••
ulations under the Department of
Agriculture in the United States
by which cattle may be imported
from Canada, as follows:
"Cattle originating in fully listed
herds are eligible for entry into
the United States providing the
individual cattle have passed a
negative brucellosis test within 30
days of being presented for im-
portation.
"Cattle from negative herds in
Canadian Brucellosis Certified
Areas are eligible for entry into
the United States, providing the
individual cattle concerned have
passed a negative brucellosis test
within 30 days.
"Cattle from herds which are
neither fully listed nor in a bruc-
ellosis certified area but which
have passed a negative brucellosis
test not more than three months
preceding the date of offer for
entry, and the cattle offered for
entry have been tested negative
within 30 days preceding their
offer for entry are eligible to en-
ter the United States, providing
that the test of the individual an-
imals has been at least 15 days af-
ter the negative herd test.
"Animals under 30 months of
age, officially calfhood vaccinated
against brucellosis and from herds
not known to contain any animals
affected with brucellosis, are el-
igible for entry into the United
States without a brucellosis test
providing adequate indentification
and the official calfhood vaccina-
tion certificate are available.
"Cattle of the beef breeds orig-
inating in the four Western prov-
inces of Canada are eligible for en-
try into the United States follow
ing a negative brucelosis test with-
in 30 days of being presented for
importation to that country."
Under the regulations approved
by the Federal Government of
Canada, control areas can be set
up where a majority of cattle
owners have expressed desire to
° eradicate the disease from their
herds. Petition forms must be
circulated among the cattle own-
ers of each township, and these
are certified by the clerk of the
township. Then they are forward-
ed to the agricultural representa-
tive and from there to the Live
Stock Commissioner in Toronto.
When the commissioner is satisfied
that two-thirds of the cattle own -
erns in the country are in favour,
then the area is designated a Bru-
cellosis Control Area.
Tests are made, and there is no
charge made for it.. If animals
are positive, they are disposed of
for, slaughter under inspection.
The owner receives compensation
of the market value from the
slaughterer, and from the Federal
Department of Agriculture, $40
per head for grades, and $100 for
pure breds.
The Ontario Brucellosis Act
would continue to be in effect,
and the test and slaughter policy
outlined above would supplement
the plan. Eradication of the dis-
ease is considered vital to the
health of the people, to the main-
tenance of export markets for
cattle, and of domestic markets
for milk.
