Two of the beasts were slated for liquid- ation on Wednesday, if not claim ed. "The dogs run too fast," street foreman Harold Maloney gave as the reason why more dogs were not captured. One animalwas so vicious no one could approach it. However, we still want more, and urge you to send them along to us. This week we have a couple of recipes from out good friend, Bernice Fritz, and another from Mrs. Harold John- ston, for mincemeat, which is most appropriate at this time of year. OATMEAL CAKE (Mrs. Ward Fritz) 1 cup oatmeal 1 cup boiling water Allow to stand for 20 minutes, Cream 2 cups brown sugar and 1/a cup butter, add 2 well beaten eggs, sift 1 cup flour, 1 teaspoon cinna- mon, 1/a teaspoon cloves and 1 teaspoon baking soda. Add to fir. st creamed mixture. Add 1/2 cup chopped dates. Bake in medium oven. ORANGE CREAM CUSTARD (Mrs. Ward Fritz) Mix together thoroughly and cook in double boiler until thick- ened: 2 egg yolks, beaten 1/3 cup white sugar 2 level tablespons flour 1/3 teaspoon salt 1 cup orange juice 1 cup evaporated milk Add 1 teaspoon grated orange rind. Cool and turn into serving dishes over 1/2 cup orange slices. Chill. Cover with meringue made of 2 egg whites stiffly beaten with 4 tablespoons sugar. Decorate with additional orange slices. MINCEMEAT (Mrs. Harold Johnston) 4 lbs. apples peeled and chop - ed 2 lbs. seedless raisins 1 lb. currants Y4 teaspoon each mace, all- spice and cloves 2 tablespoons molasses x12 pound blanched alomnds, (optional) 1 pound suet chopped fine 1 pound sultana raisins 2 pounds brown sugar 4 teaspoons salt 1 pint apple eider (or to suit taste) Rind and juice of 2 lemons Mix well ,store in a crockery jar in a cool place, from time to time stir mixture. Keep for about two weeks before using. Will keep well during winter. Manitoulin --- After Repeal Manitoulin Island repealed the Canada Temperance Act. They then came under the Liquor Con trol Act. At the end of two years under the L.C.A., after a careful study of conditions, a reputable citizen made this report: "Drinking among minors still exists and on a scale that even those most anxious to discredit the C.T.A. would not dare suggest prevail in C,T.A. counties. Minors are getting liquor evidently with- out any trouble. The mail boat leaves necessary provisions to bring as many as 50 to 60 cases of beer daily. The day I was ort the boat nearly all the passengers were drinking both beer and rye." Of bootlegging—"It seems ram pant everywhere ... Drinking has become a menace. J. McLaughlin of St, Marys and Zone Chairman Harvey McDermitt and Mrs. McDermitt of Fordwich. A special award was given to Ken Edgar who has been for 14 of the 15 years the tail twister of the Howick club. His gift was a framed certificate called the "Bullshooter's License."
