NEW INDUSTRY
(Huron Expositor)
•A new industry is in full swing
.in Egmondville with orders al-
ready pouring in from London
and Kitchener. Jackson Aluminum
Limited have started manufactur-
ing operations of a new -style win-
dow and influx of orders have
hard-pressed the firm's product-
ion. Known as the Seaforth Ful-
Vue Slider window, it is a sash-
less type, with glass running on
plastic inserts. The glass is eas-
ily removed for cleaning and, not
needing putty, maintenance is de-
scribed by Jackson officials as
being practically nil.

TO THE IVXOON???
(Clinton News -Record)
Several of the Legionaires at-
tending the banquet meeting of
the Clinton Branch 140 Canadian
Legion at the hall here on Mon -
clay night were treated to an ex-
cellent view of one of the Rus-
sian Sputnicks as it sped across
the sky, Observers reported that
it took about four minutes to
cross from horizon to horizon, at
about 6.14 p.m. It was described
as having a rolling motion, in-
creasing in light intensity, and
then fading to nothing apparently
as it revolved and the reflection
faded.

Kohler Defends
Marketing Board
Against Charges
Charges, which have been circu-
lating in the province that the On-
tario hog marketing board arbit-
rarily establish prices and allocate
hogs to the various processing
plants, have been emphatically de-
nied by the general manager of
the agency, J. R. Kohler, who has
issued a statement setting forth in
detail the selling practices of the
board,
"Ontario hogs are coming into
open competition on the market, as
a result of the operations of the
marketing plan, as they never have
before," said Mr. Kohler, in his
statement. "At the start of each
day the sales staff decides on an
asking price and negotiates with
processors on that basis, selling
hogs according to the highest bids,
with each processing plant in the
province having an equal oppor-
tunity to bid, The asking price
may be adjusted up or down dur-
ing the day according to the price
which may be obtained. Each sale
of hogs in every yard is an entir-
ely separate Ileal and sales go on
all day and every day, on this
basis. Any lot of hogs not sold
can be obtained by increase in bids
of as low as 10 cents by any buyer.
"If a processor does not secure
the volume he wishes, it is becausa
he has not come forward soon en-
ough with a bid. We have contin-
ually stated publicly that we are
at all times selling hogs for the
best price obtainable, and price
alone determines the buyer. Our
board follows the sales process
very closely, and any departure
from the laid down policies would
be very quickly detected and
dealt with.
"AIl hogs are for sale. Bidding
establishes the price and the buy-
er, and there is no establishing
of price on our part.. Processors
who say they are not c.etting what
they think is their needed share of
hogs can always correct this situa-
tion by bidding up for them. This
is the first time that open compe-
tition has really come into effect
in our hog industry in Ontario.
Our sales records show that it has
resulted in better returns for our
producers."
Take Care That
Fire Does Not
Strike Your Farina
With cold weather approaching,
many fires will be lit in farm
homes in heating systems that
have not been checked for some
time. It is estimated that about
one-third of farm fires start from
defects in heating and cooking
systems.
Several precautions can be tak-
en to cut clown on the number
of farm fires in Ontario.
1. Inspect flues, chimneys,
spark arrestors and cooking equ-
ipment to make sure they are in
good condition.
2. Check for inadequate, defec-
tive, and misused electrical wir-
ing systems and replace them
where needed.
3. Check fuses and all electric-
al equipment to make sure they
are of the proper type and in
good condition.
4. Check the storage of fuels
and other inflammable material
to make sure that it is adequate-
ly and suitably protected, See that
the storage area is neat and loc-
ated in a safe area with all fire
hazards removed.
5. Inspect lightning rods to
make sure they are grounded and
securely connected.
6. See that there is some home
fire -fighting equipment available
and make sure that it is in a
condition and location where it
can be instantly used.
7, Never spray or pour kero-
sene (coal oil) on a burning fire,
This is an extremely dangerous
practice. It may produce a "fast
fire"—but it can easily end in a
fast calamity.
