Springhill Disaster
Folk of Great Lake
The recent disaster at Spring-
hill, Nova Scotia, has brought
memories to many of the old-
timers in this district of the ter-
rific storm which hit this area 45
years ago and claimed the lives of
235 men on the Great Lakes.
Many older people will likely quite
well remember this great tragedy,
but for the benefit of the younger
generation we are reviewing what
we can dig up in old records re-
garding that fateful day.
It was 45 years ago this Nov-
ember 9 that a severe wintry
storm blew up with a 90 mile an
hour gale that whipped the lakes
into a maelstrom. It was the
worst storm in the history of navi-
gation on the Great Lakes. Four -

teen ships went down to Davy
Jones' locker, and of this number
eight were lost in the sandy bed
of Lake Huron. Down with those
eight went 178 seamen. Some
bodies floated into shore, 27 of
them in the Goderich area, and 11
in the area from St. Joseph to
Grand Bend, but the vast majority
of them were never found.
Eleven bodies were brought to
the funeral home in Zurich, which
at that time was operated by W.
H. Hoffman and Son. There they
were kept until someone who
could identify them came to claim
the nien.
An odd part of the whole affair
was that all the ships apparently
went down at the same time. Men

from different ships washed up
on the shore at various places,
and those who carried watches, it
was found, had them stopped at
the same times.
One of the strangest mysteries
of the entire storm was the ship,
Charles S. Price. The boat was
discovered the next day after the
storm had abated floating bottom
up some 20 miles from the mouth
of the St. Clair River. The boat
had overturned and 30 of her men
were discovered dead in her hold.
It was the general belief at that
time that most of the men did
not drown, but perished from the
cold and snow. Many of the bodies
when found, were covered with
ice.
An amusing incident also took
place in connection with the tra-
gedy. Jack Thompson, a Hamilton
man, was in a hotel room in
Montreal shortly after the storm,
and picked up a paper only to read
of his own death. He had quit
the boat in Montreal when she
left for the voyage up the lakes.
He hurried home to find a funeral
service being performed for him.

Remember the day you brought that tiny bundle of joy
home from the hospital? It was a great moment. You were
determined nothing would mar the happiness of the
days ahead.
It is quite natural for the mature young man to think
seriously about the unforeseen ... to think about family
