Fbr many years a great number
of newborn infants died of a rath-
er obscure disease characterized
by severe jaundice. During the
past 15 years knowledge of this
condition has tgreatiy increased.
It fib now known as Hemolytic
Disease of the Newborn or Eryth-
roblastosis !and occurs in newborn
infants, whose mothers have no
Rh factor in their blood. These
mothers are referred to as "Rh
negative". Laboratories, by study-
ing the pregnant mother's blood,
can now predict whether her in-
fant will or will not have the dis-
ease. There is still no means of
preventing its occurrence, but, a
treatment has been developed
which. will slave practically all of
those who are afflicted.
In Ontario each year it is est:-
mated
st:mated that we can expect about
800 `babies to be born With Hemo-
lytic Disease of the Newborn.
With adequate early treatment all
but about 40 will survive and de-
velop into normal children. If no
treatment .is instituted about 500
of these may die and many of
those who lime will have perman-
ent brain damage.
A survey undertaken two years
!algo, revealed that there were
many areas in Ontaa'i'iio with insuf-
ficient laboratory facilities for the
investigation: of this disease and
With no personnel trained in the
technique of its treatment.
The Hon!. Mackinnon Phiilliips is
pleased to announce that due. to
the Ontario Department of Health,
the Ontario Medical: Associattibn,
and the Ontarlla Division of the
Junior Red Cross this disturbing
situat;ibn has !been! corrected. Cen-
tres for investigation and treat-
ment are now established through-
curt the province, so that all. physi-
cians have these services available
for their patients. Every Ontario
mother, no matter where she lives,
by consulting her doctor early in
pregnancy, is tow assured of all
that modern anedieline can provide
in the management of this disease.

Oil. End to end, all maps that the company has distributed to.
Canadian motorists and tourists in past quarter century would
go from coast to coast and back again via the Trans Canada
Highway. Pam D'Orsay, left, and Sheila Billings are checking
the route such a map -paved highway would follow.
