Zurich Citizens News, 1958-10-22, Page 11WEDNESDAY, ocroaat 22, L95S ZURICH Citizens QTS PAGE ELEvEN SPORTS DIGEST By DON O'BRIEN (Citizens News Sportswriter) SHACK AND 13ACKSTROME TOP ROOKIES Eddie Shack, powerful wingman with the New York Rangers and Ralph Backstrome of the World Champion Montreal Caned - lens appear to be the top NHL rookies this season. Shack, the heavily built speedster who is certainly moulded for modern hockey, seems headed. for NHL stardom. The Rangers 'displayed their knowledge of Shack's expected potential by :protecting him in the draft instead of veteran centreman Dave Creighton who is now starring with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Shack will have •a definite edge over Backstrome in his quest for the Calder Trophy honour since Backstrome will have a tough 'chore in making one of the Canadien's three top forward lines. At the present time he has been playing on the so-called fourth line with Don Marshall and Marcel Bonin. However, rumour has it that if another rookie, Ab Mcbon'ald, who, by the way, saw some action in the Stanley Cup playoffs last season, falters in his quest for the left-wing job vacated by Bert Olmstead on the Beliveau-Geoffrion line, Backstrome will probably get a Track at this important position. On Saturday night the Toronto Maple Leafs displayed a bruising defenceman named Carl Brewer, He certainly ought to keep a few heads up in the league for a while. He really hits them. Detroit has six new faces this season with Len Lunde from the Western Hockey looking the most promising. KNOX FINALLY DISPLAYS GREATNESS The highly publicized Ronnie Knox who has been a football 'failure for the past two seasons has seemingly rose to his 'expectations at last with the Toronto Argos of the Big Four. Perhaps Ronnie's decision to leave his trouble -making step -father, Harvey, behind, has been the main reason for Ronnie's sudden rise to stardom. Ever since Ronnie's successful college career, Harvey has 'ruined the young athlete's chances with the Hamilton Tiger -Cats, the Saskatchewan Rough Riders and the Chicago Bears of the National Football League. Under Knox's capable and strong performances the last place Argos have decisively won their last two outings against the two top teams in the league—the Hamilton Ti -Cats and the Ottawa Rough Riders. In these two contests that Knox directed, Argos scored 78 points without having a single point counted against them. Quite a record for a team that had previously won only ''one game all season. The "new" Argos are now rated a definite threat for the Big Four playoffs. SPURTS POST SCRIPTS "Early Season Hat Tricks Wingmen Alex Delvecchio and Vic Stasiuk of the Detroit Recl 'Wings and the Boston Bruins respectively, scored early season hat tricks over the weekend. Incidentally, Delvecchio has joined up with the fabulous Gord Howe and centre Norm Ullman to form Detroit's new Production Line. The seemingly ageless "Rocket" Richard has already copped four goals in the young 1958-59 season. Jerry Toppazini's five -goals for the Boston Bruins are tops in the league as of now. Injuries Already The Boston Bruins playoff chances... received a severe jolt +on Saturday night when 'star defenseman Doug Mohns suffered a fractured jaw. Mohns, possessor of one of the best shots in 'the league will be lost to the Bruins for five or six weeks. Looks like a rough season all around for defencemen as Doug Harvey, of the Canadiens, and Elmer "Moose" Vasko, of the Black Hawks, have also been sidelined for a couple of weeks. \Tasko's importance to Rudy Pilous' Chicago crew was certainly evident over the weekend as the early season leaders dropped two in a row to fall to second place in the standings.
