HomeMy WebLinkAboutZurich Citizens News, 1958-10-15, Page 11'WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 15, 1958 ZURICH Citizens NEWS SPORTS DIGEST By DON O'13RIEN (Citizens News Sportswriter) 'KINGS COP CHAMPIONSHIP Saturday'•s 8-0 shuotout over the Latta All -Stars capped the Zurich Lumberking's bid for the All -Ontario Intermediate "C" Baseball Champiosnhip, and thereby proved a fitting finale for what has certainly been a most successful season. The win was certainly a team effort as brilliant pitching, timely hitting and perfect fielding were combined to close the season out in .great fashion. This was the 'King's second OBA "championship in the past three years and thus they have cert- ainly proven their superiority on the ball field as far as this /district is concerned. When you consider that "C" classification includes towns up to a population of 3,000 it makes the winning of these laurels •even more gratifying. Incidentally, the Latta team used 16 players to Zurich's ten in the final contest. The Zurich club was minus Arnie Meyer, Jim Ruttle, Ben Gignac, Ken and George Parker and of course, Ron Heller, who, for various reasons, were unable to make the trip. 0 0 0 YANKEES TAKE SERIES Those "Came through in the clutch" guys have done it again. After giving the Braves a 3-1 series edge the Yankees became the first team since the Pirates of 1925 to come back :and take the next three games to cop all the laurels. Once Hank 'Bauer, Gil McDougald, Yogi Berra, Bob Turley and Elson 'Howard, etc. ,got rolling, there was no stopping Casey Stengel's boys. Even though the Yankees took a couple more games than we predicted before the series started, in copping 'the honours, we had the satisfaction of predicting correctly for :a change. Don't be surprised if they win it again next season.
