Zurich Citizens News, 1958-09-03, Page 11'WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 3, 1958 ZURICH Citizens NEWS SPORTS DIGEST By DON O'BRIEN (Citizens News Sportswriter) 'KINGS COP TITLE Playing before one of the largest crowds in several seasons -the Zurich Lumberkings proved that they had it when the chips 'were down by capturing the sudden -death tilt from a determined Mitchell crew 11-5. Both pitchers, Bill Gatenby, for the Lin - coins, and Ron Heller for the 'Kings, pitched hitless ball for 'three innings. Then the roof fell in. Four timely hits, including one of the longest home runs ever hit at the local park and four walks were responsible for seven Lumberking runs in the big fourth inning. Certainly was a fitting ending for a trem- endous series. as far as looal enthusiasts are concerned. LAYOFF APT TO HURT LOCALS The Lumberkings will now meet the winner of the Celedonia- -Waterdown series which could possibly be finished at the end of this week. The 'Kings who have strengthened considerably this past season are ,performing in the Intermediate "C" category this season due to the lack of competition in the "D" category. Only two teams in Ontario are listed as "D" clubs this season. In- cidentally Dashwood is one of them. Two other clubs are still in the running for the "C" championship, Orono and Latta. If the 'Kings are able to get by the winner of the Caledonia- Waterdown series they will .meet the winner of the Orono- Latta series. This would certainly involve quite a bit of travelling as Orono is near Peterborough while Latta is in the Belleville dist- rict. Who says they just play winter ball in the tropics? BRAVES -YANKEE SERIES AGAIN? The New York Yankees and the Milwaukee Braves look like "sure -ins" as World Series contenders for the .American and National Leagues respectively. Casey Stengel's Yankees have had a comfortable lead since May while Fred Haney's Braves have weathered countless injuries to some of their key players during the early part of the season to take a substantial lead on the rest of the pack. Rookie pitching sensations, Joey -Jay, Juan Pizzarro, and Carleton Willey came to Haney's rescue "when .such veteran hurlers as Bob Buhl, Gene Conley and Bob Rush faltered. If the hustling Braves continue at their present rate they will give the Yankees, who have become quite sluggish • of late, all they can handle in the World Series. According to "'Old Case", "Bullet" Bob Turley, who has already won 20 games this season, is one of the few bright lights on a pretty dismal Yankee outfit. However, you can't sell those "have it, when the chips are clown" Yankees short, Nevertheless, it should certainly make quite an interesting .series. SPORTS POST SCRIPTS feats Off To Ron Heller for his excellent pitching in the sudden -death contest, and throughout the whole series. 'Bob White for his fine relief job when a few walks and fielding lapses put Heller in trouble in the eighth inning. Manager Tom Rawlings for leading the team to their fourth straight Huron -Perth Championship in their respective division. . 'Hensal.l Bantams Defeated Coach Ernie Chipchase's Hensall Bantams were finally elim- inated from further OBA bantam competition when they lost out to Wyoming in a best two out of three series. The boys had previously eliminated Atwood, Mildmay and Allenford to win the WOAA Bantam "D" title. Would have been nice to see them go all the way. Tie Wasn't Tight in Clutch Lyn Lary, ex -big leaguer, tells of the time Eric McNair and Roger Cramer, then with the A's, came home too late, and with too much, after a night on the town. But the next day, against Lary's Yankees, McNair got hits the first three times up. When McNair went to bat the fourth time, a hit would have won the game. Alas! Eric popped up. And Cramer wailed: "Look at the bum; he's sobering up" Have You Any Phone In Your Requirements Or Drop In To See Us FILL YOUR BIN WITH STOVE or NUT COAL CLOVER, ALFALFA or TIMOTHY SEED WE WILL PAY YOU TOP PRICES SEED -CLEANING is Our Specialty — Give Us A Call Stade & eido Hardware PLUMBING -- HEATING — TINSMITHING COAL and SEEDS PAGE ELEVEI4 Zuricl, Wins HuronPertk 1(:::14::oloorill„ 13142:iiik Mitchell 11-5 in Eighth Garne Ron Heller and Don O'Brien led tate. Zurich Lumberkings to an 11-5 victory over the Mitchell Lincolns to win the eighth game of the best cif seven series, for the Hume on Perth Intermediate: "C" title. The game was played in Zurich last Wednesday night before the largest crowd in many years, close to 400 fans. Besides pitdhiing six hit ball for the locals, Helder smashed out one of the longest home runs ever seen in the Zurich, ball park. With one runner on base in the fourth inning, he drove a ball to deep left !field.' which ended up weld behind the race track. On top of this he. lined out a single in the eighth inning. Don O'Brien lied the 'Kings at bat, with three hits in dive times at bat, one of them a double. In the fourth, inninig, when he came up to bat twice, he had two hits in the one inning, something which very seldom happens. Delfensiveiy, MI Yungiblut, was a standout for the Zurich crew at third base. He made no less than five beautiful; plays, any one of which could have gone through for a (base hit. "Red" Theander, who has been snored to .the Band; of Montreal in Chatham, was also aback in Zu- rich uniform for this big game. He collected a single, and handled three chances throughout the con- test. Fine relief pitching in the eigh- th inning by Bob White stopped a leliitcheli threat, after a couple cif hits and a couple of amental lapse• on the part of the Zurich defens- ive organization had given the Lin- colns a few runs. Both Heller for Zurich. and Bili Gatemby on the mound for Mit- chell, pitched air -tight ball for the first three innings. Heller al- lowed only .two hits until the end of the sixth inning. In the last of the fourth the ALVIN WALPER 'Kings oce nbined three walks and PROVINCIAL four hits (one of them Heller's LICENSED AUCTIONEER home run) to score seven runs. When Bob White came on in relief in the eighth inning, he was only four outs away from winning the game. The last four men he retired all went down via DOCTORS the strikeout route. Bill Gatenby started on the mound for the Lincolns and was relieved in the fourth inning by Buster Brown. He in turn was lifted in the sixth in favour of Bab Sadler. Zurich will now advance into OBA Intermediate "C" competi- tion, and will meet the winner of the Caledonia - Waterdown series for the right to play either Orono or Latta in the OBA et'inat.
