GRAND BEND
(ELAINE GRAINGER,
Youngest Contestant Wins
Beauty Contest
On September 1, Grand Bend
held its annual Labour Day cele-
bration in the form of a parade,
variety show and the biggest
event, a Beauty Contest.
The parade was led by the
Dashwood Brass Band. The band
was followed by 16 beauty con-
testants, each riding in an open
convertible, beautifully decorated
for the occasion.
Because of poor weather all the
activities of the day were held
inside the Lakeview Casino. Grand
Bend certainly is fortunate to have
a building where 1,600 people can
go to see a Labour Day celebra-
tion.
The variety show began with
Miss Pat Finlay singing three
very enjoyable numbers.
The Master of Ceremonies, Mr.
W. E. Mcllroy, invited talent from
the audience and the results were
wonderful.
The 16 beauty contestants par-
aded in front of the applauding
crowd. The decision was very hard
for the judges to make but finally
the winners were chosen: Miss Pat
Lovell, 17, of Kippen, was chosen
"Miss Grand Bend of 1958"; Miss
Pat Finlay, 21, of Thedford, was
chosen "Miss Labour Day 1958"
and Miss Sharron Swartz, Detroit,
as "Miss Civic Holiday."
Miss Lovell was crowned by last
year's Queen.
Due to the fact that an Ameri-
can girl is not eligible for the
Miss Western Ontario competi-
tion, which is being held in Wind-
sor on Wednesday, September 3,
Miss Kinlynn Shaw, of Grand
Bend, who placed fourth, will ac-
company Miss Pat Lovell and Miss
Pat Finlay.
