New Lacombe Pigs Being Distributed through Country About 100 boars and 15 breeding groups of the new Lacombe breed will be distributed throughout the country this fall, Canada Depart- ment of Agriculture announced to- day. The Lacombe breed is the re- sult of a hybridization and selec- tion program initiated by the de- partment in 1947, which combined the blood of the Danish Landrace, the Chester White, and the Berk- shire breeds. This is the second release of the Lacombe boars. Fifty were distributed Canada -wide last fall. As was the case then, the boars this year will be made available to producers of commercial swine on the basis of a chance draw. The Lacombe females will be released in breeding groups con- sisting of three gilts and one boar. Officials stress that these breeding groups are for the propagation of purebred Lacombes by private breeders and only those interested in raising purebred Lacombes, and with some experience in raising purebred livestock, should apply. Application forms and details of regulations covering the draws are available on request from the Ex- perimental Farm, Lacombe, Alta. Deadline is September 29. A committee will examine the applications, and a public draw will be held at Lacombe. Breed- ing groups will he drawn first and successful applicants who also ap- plied for a boar will be eliminated from the draw• for the latter. Pieldman Asks a Question What is Your Opinion About Plan For Stabilization ,of Farm Prices? (By J. CARL HEMINGWAY) Some time ago the government announced a set of stabilization prices. These have received ap- proval in some quarters and ser- ious opposition in others. Your Federation of Agriculture feels that this is an important subject and is vitally concerned in learn- 0 ing the opinion of producers of the different commodities. If a stabilization price is too low it is of no benefit to the producer. If it is too high we run into surpluses that have to be dis- posed of in some manner. The problem is to discover what is right. There are those who say it is unnecessary and harmful to production. The latter part of August meet- ings will be held for members of the Federation jointly with repre- sentatives of the commodity groups to arrive at a definite policy that can be supported by the Ontario Federation of Agriculture. You, the producer, know better than anyone else the effects of support prices to your income. We hope you will consider this prob- lem as it affects you and let your representative know your solu- tion. It is only in this way that your organization can best serve you.
