DASHWOOD AND MITCHELL HAVING REAL BATTLE
It was our privilege to watch the doubleheader playoff ball
games between Mitchell and Dashwood on Monday, and from
what we can see it is anybody's series. Even though the Legion-
aires are carrying a 2-1 game lead into Tigertown on Wednesday
night, we would hate to predict they will wind the series up at
'three games to one.
While we believe Mitchell has a better balanced club than
Dashwood, their pitching does not seem to be as strong as that
'of the Tigers. When Steve Mitro is on, we feel he is one of
the best in the league, and will give Mitchell plenty of trouble.
Tonight's battle will probably see Bob Sadler or Bill Gatenby
throwing against Steve Mitro or Remi Wein.
BLAME THE UMPS FOR THE LONG GAMES
From the fans' viewpoint, games that take as long to play
gas the two on Monday did are poor encouragement to bring
them back again. The morning game, played in Dashwood, took
almost three hours to play, while the evening game in Mitchell
lasted about two and three-quarter hours. Six hours of sitting
at ball games in one day is too much for any spectator, and
it is no wonder the crowds are dwindling in the Huron -Perth
League. On top of this, none of the games ever start on time.
We feel most of the blame for these offences lies on the
shoulders of the umpires. When a game is scheduled to start
at 6 p.m., it should start then and not half an hour later. Most
fans arrive at games about 15 minutes before they are to start,
and then when they have to wait an extra half hour they are
&disgusted before the ball game ever gets under way.
We attended a Huron -Perth league meeting recently, and
distinctly remember hearing the president of the league telling
the umpires to start the games right on time, whether the teams
are finished with their warm-up or not. But do you ever see
the umpires do it — — no, they wait until the players are good
and ready to start.
And then throughout the game, do you ever hear the urn
pires telling the players to hustle it up between innings ? No,
they stand and watch as the players leisurely walk in and out
to the player's bench. In pro ball the umpires are forever
hurrying the players along, and this speeds the game up con-
siderably. A few of these things tried out in this league may
'coax more spectators to come out to the games. No fan likes to
Sit through a three-hour ball game.
'MITCHELL-DASHWOOD WINNER MEETS ZURICH
The winner of the current Mitchell -Dashwood series will
meet the Zurich Lumberkings in a best of seven series for the
right to go on into OBA Intermediate "C" playoffs. If Mitchell
should win in Dashwood tonight, the first game would start in
':Zurich on Friday night.
However, if Dashwood wins tonight, the fifth game of their
series will be played in Mitchell on Friday night, and the winner
will be playing in Zurich on Monday. So there you are, ball
fans, it will be either Mitchell vs Zurich on Friday night, or
Dashwood or Mitchell vs. Zurich on Monday night.
LUMBERKINGS WILL BE SHORTHANDED
Regardless of who plays Zurich in the final round, the
Lumberkings will be shorthanded for the series. "Red" Theander
has received word he is being transferred to the bank in Chat-
ham on Wednesday, August 13, and Bill Yungblut, who walks
down the aisle on Saturday. the 16th, will also be away for
.a week or so.
On top of these two stars being absent for some of the
,games, centre -fielder Bruce Moir has been nursing a sore arm
for a couple of weeks, and it is doubtful if he will be ready
to start.
We aren't throwing out the crying towel for the locals, but
we do want the fans to know how things stand. We still feel.
confident the 'Kings can upset either Mitchell or Dashwood in
'the final series.
SPORT POST SCRIPTS
Remi Looked Good—
In the holiday doubleheader, Remi Wein, a mainstay of
the Dashwood Tigers, made an impressive showing. In the
morning game he was given credit for being the winning pitcher,
coming in in relief in the fourth inning and giving up only
three hits over the rest of the game. No runs were scored off
his pitching. On top of his fine throwing performance, Remi
had two hits in this game. In the game at Mitchell Remi had
an exceptionally good night at the bat, smashing out three more
hits, one a double. To you, Remi, we say congratulations.
Jimmy Finds His Batting Eye—
After a rather slow start at the plate all season, Jimmy
Hayter, popular member of the Dashwood Tigers, has really found
the range in the current playoff with Mitchell. In the morning
game, Jim came through with a double and a single, and in the
nightcap at Mitchell he had a grand slam homer and a triple.
Jim promises us if they eliminate the Mitchell nine he will
give the Zurich pitching staff plenty of trouble. We hope you
beat them, Jim; there is nothing we would rather see than a
red-hot Dashwood -Zurich series, when the rivalry could be at
:its peak.
