STAR SHORTSTOP
RON HELLER,
is the probable starter against
the highly -rated Sarnia Braves
on Monday, Civic Holiday. In
his appearances to date, the
right-hander has looked very
impressive, and with a bit more
conditioning should be ready for
the playoffs.
"RED" THEANDER
will be going all out to fatten
his batting average in Monday's
exhibition ball game against the
Sarnia Braves. Red, along with
the other members of the team,
are disgusted with their poor
showing against Listowel Jun-
iors last Wednesday, and prom-
ise to make up for it Monday.

Carbon Dioxide Equipment Now
Installed at Canada Packers, Toronto
Instalation of carbon dioxide
equipment to render hogs un-
concious prior to slaughter has
been completed and is now in use
at the Toronto plant of Canada
Packers Limited.
Known as the Hog Immobilizer,
this is the •first installation of
carbon dioxide equipment for an-
imal 'slaughter in Canada and one
of the very few instaalied to date
in North America.
W. F. McLean, President of
CanadaPackers, said that it was
the company's intention to install
similar
equipment in, a12 of the
company's plants across- Canada
just as soon as management was
satisfied that the Toronto installa-
tion was completely workable.
The Hog Immobilizer, wihich can
oiperrate at a capacity of 400 hogs
an hour, or •elos,e to seven a min-
ute, was purchased in Denmark.
Hogs enter the Immobilizer's
travelling conveyor one at a time
from a narrow runway, are oar -
vied down into a carbon dioxide
chamber and returned to the ex-
it side umconscious. From here
they proceed for further proces-

sing. The entire operation, from
the time a hog enters the Im-
mobilizer until it is slaughtered,
Makes about 75 seconds. Since the
approximately fifth of a pound of
carbon dioxide inhaled by a hog
is enough to render it completely
unconscious for from six to seven
minutes, the operation is consid-
ered to he the most humane meth-
od of practicable slaughter known
to modern science.
The carbon dioxide, which: ar-
rives by tank truck, ,is pumped
into a storage tank at the plant
for use as required. °opacity of
the storage tarok is. 15,000 pounds:,
sufficient, at the rate of a fifth
of a pound per hog, for 75,000
animals. Gas concentrated in the
gas chamber of the Immobilizer
remains at a constant 54 to 55
percent.
Canada Packers makes use of
the captive -bolt pistol to render
cattle unconscious prior to slough- •
er.
"The captiivebolt .pistol is un- .
suitable for hogs: however," Mr.
McLean said. "Hogs have arrays
presented quite a .problem in this •
regard and we have had the mat-
ter under study for a hong period
of time. The carbon dioxide me-
thod seemed to be the best solu-
tion and it was decided to in-
stall it at the Toronto plant. Once
we are satisfied that it will work
smoothly under varying condit-
ions, we propose to proceed with
the installation of similar equip—
ment in all of our plants".
