HomeMy WebLinkAboutZurich Citizens News, 1958-07-30, Page 11WEDNESDAY, JULY 30, 1958 ZURICH Citizens NEWS PAGE ELEVEN •*SPORTS DIGEST By DON O'BRIEN (Citizens News Sportswriter) fb,0**1:iMM, This week's sports writer, Bill O'Brien, is a brother of our reg- ular sports columnist, Don O'Brien. Bill has been known as a fine athlete in this district for many years, prior to his leaving Zurich. While his home is in London now, everyone around here •still considers Bill as one of their own. We are indeed happy •to have him as our guest in this column. OLD TIMERS' GAME One of the best crowds of the season was on hand last Friday night when the local Intermediate Club played an exhibition game against the Old Timers, and quite an exhibition it was. To mention a few of the highlights, we understand that at least one or two of the players were seen hobbling around Sat- urday morning, although, to the best of our knowledge, no one had to resort to crutches. Not as young as we used to be, I guess. Gib Stade's booming triple to left centre, once again reminded the fans that this slugger has not yet lost his batting eye. In the late stages of the game a bench was moved out into left field and it still has not been determined whether this was provided for the Old Timer's left fielder or the Intermediate's popular short - .stop. They were both seen using it. THIRTY-SEVEN YEARS AGO Did you know that it was 37 years ago when the great Zurich ball team of 1921 won the North Wellington Baseball Association? .On digging through the records I discovered an old photograph of the members of that great team and I thought perhaps it would be interesting to recall their names:- president, John Preeter: vice- president, Charles Fritz; treasurer, Andrew F. Hess; players, Tally Wurm, Fraser Brown, Bill Brown, Clare Hoffman, Clayton Hoff- man, Lee Hoffman, Ed. Wesley, Babe Seibert, Len Callfas, Art Henning, Ray Ohlert, Pat Hess; trainer, Elmer Oesch; bat boy, Ed. Gascho. Playoff Dates Set For Huron -Perth Baseball 'C' Teams Representatives of the various teams in the Huron Perth League met in Zurich Town 1-laill ,on Mon- day night to draw up the sched- ,ulle for the playoffs. League pre- sident, Leroy O'Brien, was tin ,charge of the meeting. The three "C" teams; Zurich, Dashvvond and Mitchell, who fini- shed the season in that order, de- cided that DaShwood and Mitchell would 'play a ,threeourt-of-five sent -final series, with the winner playling Zurich, in a four out of seven, for the right to go Into OBA. .campetition. The first game .1si this series will be played! in Mitchell tan iday night with the next Dash:woad ,game being play- ed in Dashwood on Civic Holli- day, .either in the morning or aft- ernoon. The teams pianonplaying two .garnes on the holiday. This, Dashwood-Mitchelll series must be ,orver by August 9, with a winner ready to play Zurich on Monday, August 11. All games in the series will start at 6 p.m. sharp. MINOR LEAGUE BALL The guestion that arises in my mind every time I see the Intermediates play is "What is being done to develop young ball _players in Zurich?" When I heard that there is no Minor League ball at all, I was amazed. When one looks into the future one can only forsee that in two or three years' time Zurich will be back where they were 15 years ago — with no ball team at all and the beautiful clay diamond spotted with clumps of grass. I do not know whether the kids in Zurich wish to play ball, but with the number that particiate in the local Midget, Bantam and Pee Wee Hockey Clubs, there surely can be no lack of talent available. ,fully realize that it costs money and time to operate these clubs, but I am certain that there sufficient sortsminded people in Zurich who would be only too willing to assist in some small way. Mit- chell, I understand, has a complete set-up and the coaching of the kids is done by players from their Intermediate Club. While it is probably too late to start this year, let's keep this in mind for next season. After all, we have a good ball club and good facilities — let's keep it that way. HURON AND PERTH Nothing much to report in the Huron and Perth League action Tor the past week except that the playoffs will be starting shortly and after the fine performance of the local nine this year, it is only fitting that all the fans turn out and support them in the on- coming playoffs and their quest for the Ontario Championship. BIG LEAGUE PLAYERS FORGETFUL TOO? In last Saturday's American League action between Wash- ington and Detroit it was noticed in the 7th inning that Clint "Scrap Iron" Courtney was catching without his chest protector. It was remarked from the broadcast booth that the popular receiver has probably left it off because it hindered his throwing arm. It was later discovered that he had forgotten to put it on at the start of the inning — how forgetful can you get? :HUMAN AFTER ALL After winning 13 straight games in the American League, with ten of them coming in this season, pitcher Ike Delock of the Boston Red Sox finally was defeated on Saturday by the Chicago White Sox. Although his feat is still shy of the American League record of 16 straight victories in one season set by Walter Johnson and equalled by Lefty Grove, his performance to date has been a big factor in Boston being able to maintain their slim hold on sec- ond place. A FAIR SHAKE Dizzy Dean once tried to beat out an infield roller and was called out on an extremely close play. Dean started to beef and Umpire George Baer began walking away from him. Finally he tapped Baer on the shoulder— "The least you can do is answer me", "I did", replied the umpire "I shook my head." "You couldn't have", said Diz, "Why do you say that?" "Because if you had, I'd have heard something rattle". Thereupon Dean left the park — $100 poorer.
