DIGEST
By
DON O'BRIEN
(Citizens News Sportswriter)
This week's sports column is written by a popular member
of the Zurich Lumberkings, in the person of Arn Meyer. Arn
joined the 'Kings last season, and returned this year after
finishing his studies at college in Port Huron. He is a good
all-round ball player, being able to play any position on the
team as well as pitching.

OLDTIMERS VS. LUIVIBERKINGS
The Lumberkings have accepted the challenge of the Oldtimers
and the game will come off Friday night.
The Oldtimers are lining up a potent crew and promise to hand
the upstart Lumberkings a terrific fleecing. It is expected that
pitcher Ron Heimrich and outfielder "Sliver" Bedard will also line
up with the oldtimers, In addition, an effort is being made to have
Bill Zubyk and Junior Barash up for the game; provided that their
respective Intercounty clubs, London and St. Thomas, are not per-
forming that night. Several former Hensall baseball stars may also
be on hand to aid the local old timers. Game time is 7.00 p.m.
STAFFA DEFEATED IN EXHIBITION
With the aid of several of the Lumberkings, the Staffa baseball
team played on the local diamond and was defeated by the score
of 8 to 6, Friday night. The game was played under theatening
'weather conditions, but the teams managed to get six full innings
completed.
The game appeared to be more of a practice than a ball game,
but law and order prevailed throughout. The umpiring was provided
by, the resting 'King manager, Tom Rawlings, Herb Turkheim and
Bill O'Brien. They provided a better than average job, considering
their inactivity in the umpiring world. "Good work, men."
LISTOWEL RETURNING
The Listowel Juniors will invade Zurich on the local diamond this
Wednesday. The 'Kings will be out to avenge their only defeat of
the season which was inflicted upon them by the Listowel nine.
But, what about the Listowel nine? Would they like to avenge
their defeat which the 'Kings dished out to them in the very last
inning of the game played on the local diamond. The only way to
receive the answer is to be at the scene of action this Wednesday.
NO HITTER FOR RUNNING
The hot bats of the Boston Red Sox were silenced last Sunday
with a brilliant performance by Jim Bunning. Jim disposed of the
Boston hitters throughout nine innings of baseball without a base
hit. The only men to reach first base were Gene Stephens and
Jackie Jensen. To prove that this was his day, Jim retired one of
the greatest hitters of all time, Ted Williams, for the last out of
the game.
NEW AMERICAN LEAGUE LEADER
Billy Goodman of the Chicago White Sox who was sidelined
,with a knee injury for a month, fought back to take over the hitting
leadership in the American League on the strength of 19 hits in 40
times at bat this past week. He now leads with a .337 average.
Listowel Juniors
Play Here Tonight
With the exception of an ex-
hibition game with Stage last
Friday night, the Zurich Lumber -
kings are having a quiet week of
activity. Ilawever, a big game
has been lined up for this Wednes-
day night, when -the high flying
Listowel Juniors :voila be in town
for a battle with the locais.
This ListoweI Junior team is
the :only team to date which has
been able to defeat the Liimber-
kings, having handed thern their
:only lass of the season in Listowel.
When the Juniors were d Zurich
last time the Kings were !able to
squeeze out a 4-3 thrilling 'victory
over them, so this game will de-
cide which, of the two teams is
the better.
Game time for thisclash will
be 6.30, and it is quite likely that
.newcomer Ron Heller will be on
the mound for the locals.

Dashwood 6 — Listowel 2
Last Friday night in Dashwood
the Tigers tanned Listowel Juniors
by a score of 6-5. Fourteen -year-
old Dave Ratz pitched the first
four innings for Dashwood, but
needed help from veteran Steve
1Vlitro in the ,Difth to hang on to
the victory.
Dashwood 4 — Mitchell 2
The Tigers trimmed Mitchell
Legionaires 4-2 on Monday night
in Mitchela. Although they were
authit 8-5, the Dashwood nine
made their hits count 'at the right
time, as they came up with four
big runS.
Their first two runs came in
the fourth Inning when, after a
single by Raymie Wein, a double
by Bob Storrnes, newcomer to the
club Jim Russel camethrough
with a smashing single to score
two runs, They added the other
two in the first of the ninth. Mi-
chell seared 'once in the: seventh
and once in the eighth.
Raymie Wein led the Dash-
wood hitting with two singles, and
Bob Starrnes had a double. For
the Legionaires Noble, Saxton and
Smith each hit safely twice; one
of Smith'sdrives was a triple
which scared ane of their runs.
