DON O'BRIEN
(Citizens News Sportswriter)
Our sports columnist Don O'Brien, is away attending
;summer school, and in his absence he has arranged to
have other well-known sports enthusiasts fill in for him.
This week Tom Rawlings, popular manager of the Zurich
,Lumberkings is pinch-hitting for Don.
OLD-TIMERS ISSUE CHALLENGE
Despite the successful season, the Zurich Lumberkings are
experiencing, one local group remains unimpressed. This group,
composed of many former Zurich baseball stars, Eddie Gascho,
"Gib" Stade, Earl and Ivan Yungblut, Karl Heideman, Len Prang
and many others, has issued a challenge to the current Lumber-
kings.
"We will play them at the ball park, the school grounds or
in anyone's wheat field, since we don't care where we beat
them," says Eddie Gascho. "We might switch batteries with
them just to make certain they can keep reasonably close to us."
Should the Lumberkings accept the challenge, the game will
probably come off Friday, July 25. It is expected such a game
would attract a large crowd and many scouts — from the
compensation board!
Any former Zurich baseball players desiring to play in this
affair, please contact Gordon Bloch.
The Lumberkings added two more victories during the
past week. Monday night's Zurich vs. Dashwood game was
rained out but the clubs will attempt to beat the weatherman
'Tuesday night.
HELLER MAKES IMPRESSIVE DEBUT
Ron Heller made his first appearance in a Zurich uniform
since 1954 with an impressive performance against Mitchell Wed-
nesday night. Ron had a two -hit shutout until the seventh but
tired at that point. Bob White came in to save the game for him.
Heller has added some 25 pounds since 1954 and throws
much horded in addition to owning a more effective curve ball.
NO HITTER
Congratulations to Arnie Meyer and Ken Parker on their
no-hitter against Exeter. Each pitcher saved his hittless game
with a fine defensive play on two attempted bunts along the
third base line.
The Lumberkings close their regular schedule at home Fri-
day night with Exeter. A win in either of the last two re-
maining games will clinch first place and the Supertest Shield,
irregardless of what the rest of the league may do.
SCHEDULE ENDS FRIDAY
'The Huron -Perth schedule runs until July 24, so playoffs
will not be under way for at least ten days after the 'Kings
last scheduled game.
OPEN RACE
The . surprising San Francisco Giants have bounced back into
the National League lead for the first time since June 11. Count-
ed out of the race after their June swoon, the Giants have been
revitalized by the return to hitting form of rookie Orlanda Cupeda
and Willie Mays. The National League race is very much open
with only seven games between the top place Giants and the
last place Dodgers.
Meanwhile the American League are having their usual
pennant "race". This year's leaders are a group of athletes ap-
parently from the New York area.
"DIZZY" — THE CLOWN
Jerome H. Dean, also known as "Dizzy", was clownig his
way through the 1934 World Series, and incidentally teaming up
with his brother Paul to win four games, as the St. Louis
tCardinals edged the Detroit Tigers four games to three.
An exuberant Tiger lady fan seated behind the St. Louis
dugout was heckling Dean unmercifully. As "Diz" came into the
dugout at one point, she shouted "If you were my husband,
I'd poison you."
Retorted "Diz": "Lady, if you were my wife, I'd take poison."
