Tips on Haying
By Experimental
Farm Manager
W. S..Richardson of the I.en-
noxvilie Experimental Farm, says
the most ideal haying time for
red clover is at ,the half bloom
stage, alfalfa at one tenth bloom
and timothy at the first bloom.
As in is almost impossible to
harvest all of the hay crop at the
best stage of development, IV%r.
Richardson advises farmers, to
start haying early to ensure qual-
ity hay for the livestock.
Hay, one of the most important
crops in Eastern Canada, is often
wasted by being harvested too
late.
Hay plants in their growth and
development pass from a watery
substance to a hard fibrous mat-
erial at maturity. The early grow-
th is high in protein and the mat-
ure plant is low in protein. Red
clover starts out with approxim-
ately 20 percent protein and when
mature has a protein content of
less than 10 percent.
As plants grow they increase
in total crop but a considerable
part of this later growth is fibre.
Therefore the farmer has to con-
sider whether to cut his hay for
quality or for high yield. These
two periods do not coincide so a
compromise between the two must
be made.
Comments
We have just passed the spring
season of the year, and to say, it
was an exceptionally dry and cold
one, and with no let up in eight
until the middle of July. The
prediction .:given out some years
ago that plans were under way
to heat all the bodies of water
and become, a boiling reservoir
to heat the whole of ,this contin-
ent by the penetrating sun rays
has so far failed to mature.
Contrary to all, this past spring
has been one of the coldest on
record. We have now entered into.
the summer season which should
change the picture and bring
warmth to those who till the
land. They have not lost hope
at so early an hour, farmers are
always on the gamblers seat and
must take chances on the weath-
er to give them fair returns for
their labour. They are like busi-
ness people.; they are looking for
an average return. If they meet
with disappointment, then they fail
to meet with their daily obliga-
tions, leaving them in a shaky
position. Western Ontario has al-
ways !paid farmers fairly well and
we hope this year will not be an
exception. Regardless of what
may take place from now till
reaping days of this year are
over let them be courageous, as
in the past something will flare
up when unexpected. If the yield
is down prices may advance,
bringing an equity in returns. In
the meantime let us put confid-
ence in the good old summertime
to readjust the impairment caus-
ed by the dry and cold spring.
