The Needle -Point
(MRS. NORMA SIEBERT, B.A., Woman's Page Editor)
The average vacation is a suc-
cession of 2's -- 2 weeks that
are 2 short, and then you are 2
tared 2 return 2 work and 2 broke
not 2.
`VACATION AGAIN
Did I hear the farmer mutter-
ing into his shirt -front upon read-
ing my last article on "Vacations
"A i t that woman knows about
farming. Does she think I'd let
Joe Green look after rny new At -
ter of Landmaee pigs, to say noth-
ing of Princess Arabella II? She
gets so nervous when anyone else
miiaks; her." Or maybe he is. per-
fectly willing to let the neighbour
baby -slit with his prize stock but
it's mother who says. "Vacation,
couped up in a car all day with
,those youngsters would be more
3ike hades than a holiday."
Cheer up, Mother. Here are a
few tips that have helped me thr-
ough many trips to "Grandam's".
First: travel. light. Nothing so
dampens a man's enthusiasm for
the trip as trying to wedge five
suitcases into a space meant for
four. The new miracle fibres,
such as teryleme and nylon can
be laundered and dried in a few
animlutes without needing ironing,
in case of sudden emergency. Be-
sides you are on a holiday and no
one expects the children to be ab-
solutely immaculate. So don't nag
them to "keep clean," or you'll
spoil the whole trip. A wet wash-
cloth in a plastic bag, tucked into
the glove compartment is a

"must", however, for sticky fing-
ers and "c'hocol'ate mustaches."
Whale packing, throw together a
small box of "emengencies" in
case of 'that calamity to the trav-
eller --=- car .trouble. Put in a. small
hook for yourself, several comics,
one or two of those Little plastic
"roll it in the hale" puzzles, pen-
cils .and magic writing pads, etc.
Avoid balls and yo-yo's which may
get out of band and hit father
a smart crack on the back of
the head in the midst of down-
town traffic.
Throw an old blanket over the
seat; it will save the upholstery
and come in handy for the young-
sters should at become thinly or
for an afternoon sleep. A few
,pillows will raise Junior up so he
can see out without standing,
They will also ease father's back
after half a day's driving. There's
nothing bike a tram sandiwich or
a banana to ease tension when the
youngsters start to quarrel. So
carry a small box in the glove
compartment which can be gotten
out at a minu'te's notice. A therm-
os of coffee is good too tor a quack
drink, raid -morning, for a hus-
band who hasn't time to stop tor
a minute.
Toy as much aspossible to
keep the children's minds occup-
ied by things along the way and
sister wan''t mind too ouch if
brother is taking too much of
the seat or sitting on her wad
of gum. Try to carry a fund of
motor games in your head. I have I
changed the 'dud stand-by "See
who can find the most white hors-
es" for "most White cows", as
horses seem to be almost a thing
of the past. Then there is "See
how many d'ifferen't license plat-
es you can recognize". Who can
see the first dog etc., etc. Another
one that takes well is to write
down five names of objects which
the children might see, but won't
see too often, such as — a black
dog, ,baby -buggy, tractor, small
English car, a church. The one
that sees the (five first wins. Spel-
ling and geography contests are
always good.
Try to persuade father not to
drive too fast so he can stop oc-
casionally when something interc-
es'Sting appears. Watch the signs
which usually tell beforehand
when one is approaching some-
thing, like a spring or roadside
park. Let them out to drink the
spring water and explain why it
is safe to drink while stream wat-
er is not. Eat your lunch beside
a river or small lake and after-
wards let them walk out on a
small "peninsula", or out to feel
for themselves what the current
is. Show them the river basin and
the watershed, Take along a map
ofyour country and have them
point out the various concessions,
rivers, etc., as you pass them.
Encourage them to collect things
like stones, leaves, etc. Draw their
attention to the beautiful wild
flowers, along the roadside. Int can
be an education for you as well
as far them.
If it is a hot day, try to start
early and enjoy that extra hour
of Daylight Saving Time while
the air is morning Fresh. Enjoy
even more a rest after dinner
under a Gaol shade tree, rather
than driving in the heat of the
day, If an early start is not pos-
sible, try keeping the windows
closed while placing a bucket of
ice below the dashboard directly
under the air vent. Incoming air,
passing over the. ace will cool the
inside of the car, For anyone
who really suffers from the heat,
try tying a wet handkerchief a-
rouard their wrists or drop at over
their heads.
Be sure and take your oamera.
Then you can enjoy your holiday
again next winter and for years
to come.
But remember, drive carefully
and make ,this holiday season one

One of the secrets of success-
