LUMBERKINGS FINALLY LOSE ONE
Atfter winning their first Fonar Teague contests the Lunvberkings
'were finally beaten by the hustling Listowel Juniors. The ''Kings,
who had very few errors while defeating Mitchell 7-5 and 7-0, EX-
,eter 3-1, and Dashwood 8-3 over half a dozen miscues
in Licommitted
under the lights. Whether the over abundance of errors
ibe blamed on; the lights, the poor condition of the plain
tbeid, ithe absence of several df the regulars, remains to be seem
on Friday gvight when ithis same Listowel crew invades the local
aliamnond: However the players themselves believe that since they
now have the bad game out of their systems. they will be able to
even their s:ertes with Listowel on Friday night. By the way this
Listowel club is coached by the well -know Hugh McGillvary who
formerly played Intercounty ball for Stratford, Kitchener, and
'London. McGilllvary took over Harold `Gibb" Stade's job es Strat-
ford's short-stolp when the latter joined the Navy in the Late '30s.
Looks like quite a ball game. Don't Miss this one.
WHOLESALE CHANGES IN N.H.L. DRAFT
The New. York Rangers, who lost five players, were hardest
lnit in .the recent National Hockey League intra -league draft. The
'Rangers lost Danny Lewioki and Dave Creighton to Montreal; Guy
:Geevdron end Gordon Redahl, to Boston; and Jack Evans to Chicago.
Inbeating the draft, the Canadians sold forward Bert Olmstead
to Toronto and defenc.eman Dollard: St, Laurant to Chicago. In ad-
dition to Evans and St. Laurent the Black Hawks also drafted Tod
Sloan from Toronto and Al. Arbour from Detroit. The Leafs seen -
.Sloan
solved their gaol -tending problems by picking up former Ran-
ger star Johnny Bower. Each N.H.L. team is, able to protect
fourteen players plus two goalies. Veteran stars such as Ted
Lindsay of Chicago and Floyd Curry of Montreal were not drafted
even though .their names diid not appear on their respective team's
protective lists. The draft, which was originated to help the
have-nots, seemingly followed its predestination as the .perennial
Cellar dwelling Black Hawks certainly improved themselves more
than any of the other teams. Plrayers such as St. Laurent, Sloan,
.Arbour, and Evans Who were all first stringers with their prev-
ious teams will 'vOithout doubt strengthen the 1958-1959 version
.of the Hawks,

a'ilusiial, Mays Tie for May Award! •
Stan Musial of the Srt, Louis Cardinals and Willie Mays of the
SanFrancisco, Giants finished in a dead heat for the National
League's first player -of -the -month award. The award covers play
'in the month of May. Out of a possible 39 votes from the siports-
wiriters .and broadcasters throughout the National League, Musial
and Mays each received 18 votes to tie for the month's honours.
'The remaining three votes were scattered among Frank Thomas
of the Pittsburg Pirates, Daryl Spencer of the San Francisco Giants,
and Ken Boyer of the St. Louis Cardinals If the American League
• had such an award we {imagine that there would have been quite
a battle between "Bullet" Bob Turley of the New York Yankees
and slugger Bob Cery of th Kansas City Athletics for the honours.
Mittro Pitches Perfect Game
Hats off to Dashwood pitcher Steve Mitro for his perfect game
• as the Dashwood Tigers trounced the Exeter Mohawks 7-0. Mitro
faced 27 batters without 'allowing an EXeter man to reach first base.
Fails In Triple Crown Effort
Tiro, Tam, highly -prized three year old colt from the famed
• Calumet Farm stables in Kentucky, failed in its bid to capture
horse racing's Triple Crown, the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness
and the Belmont Stakes. After winning the first two, jockey
Ismael Valenzuela, who was subbing for regular jockey Bill Har -
'tack after Hartack had suffered a broken leg several days before
to race, had to settle for second behind a surprising Cavan.
(Incidentally Tim Tam who suffered a broken foot in the race
may never race again according to trainer Jimmy Jones). Rearing
great three year olds is common -place for Calumet Farms. Most
turf fans will remember their previous, triple -crown winners, Cit-
ation and Whirlaway. By the way, the famous jockey Eiddie Arcaro
rode them to victory.
Virgil First Tiger Negro
During the past week, Ossie Virgil, a third baseman, became
the first Negro in history to wear a Detroit Tiger uniform. Virgil
who was obtained in an off-season trade with the San Francisco
Giants, will iprobabiy put Canadian born Reno Bertoia out of a
job for the time being. 'Whether the charges of an organized
group in Detroit to boycott all home games unless the Tigers end
their supposed discrimination against Negroes was the reason for
Virglil's. signing or not, the fact still remains that the Tigers are
.n dire need of help.
Banker Beaned
Doug "Red" Theander, star L.urnberking short-stop, suffered
a slight concussion when he was beaned by Mitchell: pitcher Doug
,A,icheson. Theander, who works at the local Bank of Montreal,
was given orders: to rest for a :few days and thus had to miss the
game at Listowel.
Collection Plate
Shortly after seising Al Simmons to Detroit, Chicago manager
Jimmy Dykes appeared in. Church. As the pastor was taking up
• the collection, he leaned over and whispered, "Why dad you sell
Simmons?"
"We sold him, " whispered Dykes right back, "for the shame
reason you're taking up the collection five need the money."

Listowel Juniors
Thump Zurich 13-5
The Listowel Juniors stopped the
Zurich Lumberkings winning
streak at four games last Wednes-
day night as they trounced the
locals 13-5 in Listowel under the
lights. Six Zurich errors and nine
bases on balls gave the Listowel
gang all .the breaks they needed to
earn the victory.
Although the Lumberkings out -
hit the Juniors 9-8, they could not
come through with the hits at the
right time. The Listowel gang
committed five errors. Their big-
gest rally came in the third inning
when they scored six ruins on only
two hits. They had scored two in
the second, and went on to add
two more in the sixth and three in
the eighth, when a home -run drove
all three runs across the plate.
The locals scored one run in
the sixth and the other four in
the eighth, when they smashed out
five hits, including three doubles.
The individual star on the Zurich
crew was Gerry Bell, who had
three hits in three times at bat,
including one double. Don O'Brien
was next in line with two for four,
including one double, and Doug
O'Brien had two hits in five times
at bat. Bill Yungblut also hit a
double for the 'Kings.
The game which was played un-
der the lights, lasted almost three
hours.
The same Listowel Juniors will
be back in Zurich this Friday
night, and the locals promise the
score will be different than in the
game in Listowel.

Zurich, Dashwood
Both Play Friday
Action resumes in the Huron -
Perth Baseball League on Friday
night, with home games in both
Zurich and Dashwood.
The powerful Listowel Juniors
will be in Zurich, and the Lumber -
kings will be going all out in an
effort to gain revenge for the de-
feat they suffered in Listowel.
Arnie Meyer, last year's ace
right-hand pitcher, will be back in
town this Wednesday and will be
ready to play in this game. With
the return of Red Theander in
the lineup as well, the local gang
will be at full strength for this
game.
Meanwhile in Dashwood, the
Tigers will be taking on their arch
rivals, the Exeter Mohawks. In
both games played to date between
these teams, Dashwood has been
victorious, so the Mohawks will be
out to upset the highly -rated Tig-
ers.
Steve Mitro Hurls
Perfect Ball Game
Steve Mitro, ace Dashwood pit -
hurled a perfect game last Friday
night as the Tigers blanked Exeter
Mohawks 6-0 in Exeter. Mitro
faced only 27 batters throughout
the entire nine innings, and his
team-mates gave him solid support
by not committing a single error.
Not one batter reached first base
in the game. He struck out a total
of 11 Exeter batters.
While Mitro was pitching perfect
ball his mates were jumping on
Exeter pitcher, McKellar, for nine
hits, including a home run by Don
Gettner and two singles and a,
double by Bob Meharg. The Tigers
scored five of their runs in the
fourth inning on five successive
hits. They picked up the extra
counter in the sixth.
