Small Cemetery Will Be Closed,
Central Location For Tombstones
(By Florence Corrie)
Between 30 and 40 tombstones
will be replaced in a central loc-
ation on a small piece of ground
(later this year, and will be the
only sign of what at one time
was a small Presbyterian Church
and cemetery serving the early
settlers of this district,
Located on The Bayddeld Road
about three miles from Varna and
Bayfield, the Brick Presbyterian
Church had a membership of 52
souls and regular weekly services
were held there in 1850. The eld-
ers at that time were James Shaw
and James Pollock.
In 1851 Rev. Jaynes Duncan be-
came the minister of the little
church, and according to the min-
utes of the Session he was induc-
ted in May 1855. The church
when first built was without any
musical anstrumemtt, as was the
custom in the old Presbyterian
Kirks. Later, however, a small
organ was added and caused some
disagreement between members of
the church. About that timne
some of the names on the register
have the word "removed" placed
after .them.
The early roll of membersahip
lists the names of farmers Brom
the Babylon, the Goshen and the
Bronson Linesand others: Hugh
Templeton, Mr. and Mrs. Charles
Shaw, John Johnstone, an elder,
James Armstrong and the Camp-
bells, Andersons and Fosters.
Many names are still common in
this district.
Rev. Duncan united many of
the young people of the district
in marriage. The first recorded
is when Joseph Basker took Let-
itia Pollock as., his bride, Sept-
ember 19, 1861. During the years
the children of many of these
couples were brought to the Old
Brick ,Church for baptism. The
first one was John Falconer, son.
of James Falconer, baptized Dec -
of George and Agnes Anderson.
Mr, Anderson ,resides in Varna
since he retired from .the cdd fam-
ily home two and a half miles
south of •the village.
When Rev. Duncan died in 1878
he was succeeded by Rev. Danby
and almost immediately the min-
utes of the Session .tell of plans
being made for the improvement
of the church or for the replace-
ment of it. A building fund was
started in that year and the in-
itial receipts were $39.53. The
Duncans, Irwins, Farreills, Turn-
ers, Farrests, McCoys, Reids, Wil -
sons, Dewars and Rowats, to name
a few of the families, all worked
toward this end, and in 1,898 a
new church was built in Varna
Where the present Orange Holl
now stanch.
The .old Brick Presbyterian
Church was not destroyed alto-
gether, however, as these staunch
churchmen of Scotch, English and
Irish descent, dismantled it brick
bybrick and used the old mat-
erial to make the inside walks
of the new church. in the village.
At the same time the bodies of
some of their behoved ones in the
olid cemetery were removed to
a new .plot beside the village
church.
The oki burial ground was nev-
er used following the removal of
the Brick Church', and during the
years the grass: and weeds had
quite covered the did stones. The
final resting place of the olid
settlers and some of their child-
ren is now being cleared. The
dates on the slabs• go back to 1847
and many of the names on the
register of members can be seen
on them. Not all the members of
the Brick Church stayed in the
country. One of the tombstones
is in memory of Charles Shaw
who died in 1883 at the age of 60
in Kinisteno, North West Territ-
ories. What dt was that had tak-
en this young man so far from
ember 30, 1849. One of the names his family and friends could not
also is David F. Anderson, son be learned.
