We found out the number '•of boys who were going to camp and delivered paper drive notices 'on the collection which was held ,on Friday. We thank all those who helped and gave in our candy sales and paper drive. This has made it possible to go on a camp- ing trip this summrner. This week I would like to tell you of my experience with the "Boy Scouts in Newfoundland. When "I arrived in St. John's, Newfoundland, and for a couple weeks after I didn't know anybody well enough to call a friend. One Sunday when I was in church one of the ushers asked me if I was a Scout. From then on I had many friends. The Boy Scouts there took me into their troop and wel- comed me as one of their own. That is why the Boy Scouts is a great association. The first friend I met was the Provincial Executive Commissioner A, J. Tomlinson, He was a man everyone liked. In my scouting experience I say he has taught me more in leadership and scouting than anyone else. I got there in June and their summer camp was coming up. He invited me to go with them and from then on I had made many a friend. From St. John's we drove in car for about a five-hour drive to Ran- dom Island to the site of the camp. When unpacked I stopped for a while and watched the Scouts go to work putting up their tents, and was amazed in how interested they were in scouting. After sup- per that night we had out first campfire and to me this was the greatest moment of my time in Newfoundland. While sitting a- round the campfire and watching the smoke go up to t:he heavens I met all the Scouts and then and there they took me into their troop. I was called to the centre with Mr. Tomlinson and he asked me to raise my right hand and re- peat the Scout Promise after him. With the smoke blowing into my eyes and tears dropping out he ZURICH Citizens NEWS placed the troop neckerchief around me. I cannot express in words how meaningful this was to me. For the next two weeks we all enjoyed living in camp together. I learned their ways of camping and learned many things about successful leadership. This camp was well organized, well planned and when I came back to St. John's, I felt I had gone through a great experience. After the camping trip I had made many a friend. I had learned and under- stood the fourth Scout law more clearly, for it says "A Scout is a friend to all and a brother to every other Scout." This is only a little part of my experience there, but if I had the chance again I would be back in Since the 1912 sinking of the 'llitanie off Newfoundland, Canada has participated in an annual, itn- ternataonal census of icebergs. As they come down our east coast, icebergs are counted and tracked by sea and air so that shipping can be detoured in case of hazard. 0 Since 1949 federal spending through the Department of Nat- ionail Health and Welfare has in- creased from $366 mRlrl'i'on to $1.2 baullion. good old Newfoundland to live.
