The
Needle -Point
(Continued from Page 3)
beauty on filmy at its best, here
are a half dozen "tricks of the
trade" from portrait photograph-
er:
Forget the new "sack look" for
one day. Pick a bridal gown with
that tiny -waisted "wedding ring„
look. Some day you might want
to brag about that small waist-
liinie. Emphasize it by wearing
foundation garments one size
smaller than you generally wear.
Go to the hairdressers at least
one dull day before your photo
appointment — void that "just
set" Took. And don't experiment.
'Keep the hair style that you are
accustomed to wearing. The one
that flatters you is •soft and cas-
eal.
r se a •tinted liquid makeup
thse. If an you nnormally wis one ear,de it
o will
hide blemishes. Use no rouge, for
it tends to create unflattering
shadows,
Use a clear red lipstick, applied
as neatly as possible and following
the naturall outline of your lips.
Use eye makeup, even i•f you
are unaccustomed to wearing it.
The makeup will make your eyes
seem. larger, give them depth and
sparkle for •the portrait. First
darken your brows with short,
light strokes of an eyebrow pencil,
then blend with a soft brush.
For unruly eyebrows try an. old
toothbrush rubbed with .a bit of
softened soap. Next outline the
eye gently with pencil, extending
the line slightly out beyond the
outer edge of the- eyelid. Finally,
apply :mascara to the lashes, tak-
ing care to keep the lashes sep-
arated.
While you're at the photograph-
er's studio it is an excellent time
to have a more informal portrait
made, so take a change of clothes.

A dress out in simple flowing lines
,.--preferably in a solid pastel sh-
ade, is most flattening.
After the Wedding, you can
surprise your new husband with
this portrait for his office desk.
Receiving Line Rules
Need Advance Review
"Who joins the receiving line
at the reception and who doesn't?"
is the cry of many brides or their
mothers when they discover this
detail shortly before the wedding.
,Several fomes are correct, dep-
ending upon the circumstances. A
few rules apply in all cases.
The bride is always on the bride-
groom's right except when he is
in uniform. The best man and
groomsman or ushers are never In
the line; flower girls are rarely
included. The father of the bride
joins the lune only at the most
formal receptions.
When the reception is formal,
away from home or in a very
large home, This is the usual ord-
er:
Mather of the bride as hostess,
is first in iiine, just inside the
door. Next to her is the father of
the bridegroom, then the mother
of the bridegroom The father of
the bride may be next, but usually
he circulates near the line.
A. little apart, ooften standing
in front of a backdrop or fireplace
is the line of the bridal party—
bride, bridegroom, maid or matron
of honour and b.ridesnnaids.
At a home reception, the lines
o ften merge into one, beginning
w ;th the mother of the bride and
ending with the bridesmaids.
If the father of the bridegroom
is a member of the community, he
may join the father of the bride.
Thank You Notes
- Should Be Prompt
"Under no circumstances is it
proper to say thank you for a
wedding present Wth a commerc-
ial thank you card," etiquette
authorities emphasize.
However, if a bride receives a
very large inumber of gifts, she
may send out engraved cards ack-
nowledging receipt of gifts and
promising to send thanks later
by personal notes, Such a card
reads:
Miss Mary Johnson
acknowledges with thanks the re-
ceipt of your wedding gift and
will take pleasure in writing you
'at an early date.
All thank you notes should be
Shand Written in blue or black ink
on good quality stationery. Most
important of all, they should be
written promptly. Three to four
weeks is the usual deadline.
These nc,les should have a per-
sonal friendly sound. The gift
should be mentioned by name,
and, if possible, the ;bride should
try to mention how they plan to
use the gift, where they cam put
at in their new home, Chow it mat-
ches their colour scheme some
thing to make the sender lcnaw
the gift is appreciated.
The beide signs only her own
name to the thank you note, not
"Bob and Mary," even if sive sends
the note after they are married.
She should attention her husband
in the matin part of the mate—"Bab
and I were pileased to find .. ."
When she writes her new name,
it is ",Mary" to relatives. coves and close
friends who are sure to know
that "Mary" is sending the note,
'Wary .Johnston Jones" to friends
of her family who recognize her
maiden name, and "Mary Jones"
to friends of her husband's: family.
