HURON -PERTH LEAGUE OPENS
The Huron -Perth Baseball League, 1958 version, was officially
'opened on Monday afternoon at both Dashwood and Mitchell. At
the traditional Dashwood -Exeter Victoria Day opener the Tigers
.again emerged victorious to the tune of 13-5. Three Exeter hurlers
failed to stop the Dashwood onslaught. Meanwhile, at Mitchell, the
local Lumber Kings battled to a 7-5 decision over the always power-
ful Mitchell crew. Despite several mental lapses, the Lumber Kings
with the help of two double plays and fine clutch hitting emerged
victorious.
HOME OPENER: TIGERS VS. LUMBER KINGS
The opening game at the local diamond will be on Wednesday,
May 28th with the powerful Dashwood Tigers providing the opposi-
tion. The bitter rivalry that is always in evidence when these two
teams meet will probably commence with the first pitch. The Tigers
have already added a London battery; pitcher Steve Mitro and
catcher Bob Meharg. Incidentally, this same pair played several
seasons with the Exeter Mohawks a few years back. Meanwhile the
locals have added southpaw pitcher Jim Ruttie, from Dresden, who,
by the way, pitched the opener against Mitchell. In addition, Arnie
Meyer, a star of last year's team, is also expected to return as
soon as he finishes his term at Port Huron Junior College. Base-
ball excitement and rivalry will certainly be at their peak on the
.28th when the Tigers play here.
STAN "THE MAN" JOINS BASEBALL IMMORTALS
During the past week Stan "The Man" Musial smashed out his
'3,000th hit in National Baseball League play. His history -making
• blow was a ringing two -bagger off Moe DrabQwsky of the Chicago
Cubs. The big hit puts Musial in a class With seven other stars
who have already reached this goal including Ty Cobb, Honus
Wagner, Paul Waner, Tris Speaker and several others. In addition,
Musial reached the mark in less seasons than any of the stars.
Stan, who is the only player in modern times to reach the 3,000 -hit
• mark believes he would have had a chance to attain 4,000 hits had
he not spent several seasons, in the middle of his career, in the
armed forces. Former teammate "Red" Schoendienst, who now
plays second for the World Champion Milwaukee Braves is the only
other player with an outside chance of acquiring 3,000 hits in a
lifetime. He now has reached the 2,400 mark. Incidentally, Musial,
at 37, is presently leading the National League in hitting with a bat-
ting average hovering around the .500 mark. Quite a ball player!

Bill Zubyk, former Lumber King shortstop, chipped a bone in
his elbow while working out with the London Majors. Bill, who
had a fine season with the Majors last year, was expected to be
out of action for two weeks. However, we noted where Bill was
on hand for the Majors' opener last week.

struck out eight Mitchell batters.
Don O'Brien was brought in from
his first -base position several
times during the game to pull the
team out of a hole after a couple
of batters. had been walked, and
he was given credit as being the
winning pitcher.
Four big hits in the fifth inning
pushed across six of the Zurich
runs, the other two being added
in the seventh. Along with Raw-
lings, and Doug O'Brien, Red
Theander looked good at the
plate, banging out two hits in five
official times at bat.
Big Doug Aitcheson started on
the hill for Mitchell, but a sore
arm forced him to give way to
veteran Bob Sadler in the fourth
inning. "Porky" Wallace finished
the eighth and ninth innings for
the Legionnaires. Between them
they gave up six baseson balls,
and struck out four Zurich batters.
Zurich pulled off two beautiful
double plays which helped them
get out of trouble on various oc-
casions. They committed three
miscues throughout the nine in-
ning stretch.
The game, which lasted over
three hours, was played before a
large home -town crowd. The first
home game for the Lumber Kings
is set for Wednesday, May 28,

Dashwood Tigers made an im-
pressive home debut in the Huron -
Perth Baseball League for this
season, with a decisive 12-5 victory
over the Exeter Mohawks in
Dashwood on Monday afternoon.
Ri'ghthander Steve Mitro, who
was the sparkplug of the Dash-
wood nine last year, went all the
way, giving up nine hits over the
nine -inning route.
The Tigers had three big in-
nings in which they scored eight
of their 12 runs; three in the
sixth, two in the seventh, and
three in the eighth.
As well as pitching his team to
victory, Mitro lead the hitting at-
tack with a single and triple. Bob
Meharg, former Exeter star, who
has just joined the Tigers, also
had two singles, as did Don Gett-
ner.
Exeter used three pitchers in
the game: Bob Russel, Jim Russel
and McKellar all took a turn on
the hill to give up Dashwood's ten
hits. Sabourin and McKellar led
the Mohawks hitting attack with
two each.
A good turnout was on hand to
see the opening game of the sea-

error; battery: Mitro and Meharg.
Exeter: 5 runs, 9 hits, 3 errors;

Dashwood to Play
Zurich in Opener
Locals Confident
The Zurich. Lumber Kings will
be opening their home schedule
in Zurich. on Wednesday, May 28,
with their old rivals, the Dash-
wood Tigers being the opposit-
ion.
With the return of last year's
pitching ace, Arn Meyer, and the
arrival of southpaw Jinn Ruttle,
the local gang are quite confid-
ent ,they can again take the Tig-
ers into camp. In his debut a-
g.ai•nat IVIatchell on Monday, Ruttle
looked veny effective, and with, a
bit of ,conditioning should be able
to give a good account of him-
self. All the rest of last year's
team is still around, so they sh-
ould be stoner than they were
last year.
Mennbers of the Ball Club are
selling season's tickets this year
which will entitle the purchaser
to free addrnittance to. all the
home Barnes played, including
playoffs. The price of this season
pass is only $5, which is actually
a very good bargain. They may
be had from any member. of the
ball club or any of the players.
Special attractions are being
lined up for this opening game,
and the evening promises to be
an outstanding event. Remember
the date, Wednesday, May 28.
