Orchard grass, which is becoming increasingly popular in the pasture meadows of south- western Ontario, seems to fill this n,:ed in part. Orchard grass has deep exten- sive fibrous root system which gives it an advantage over many s'ia11ow rooted pasture grasses. Plants recover rapidly after graz- ANNUAL EASTER EUCHRE and NCE in the Town Hail, Rayfield on FRS 1 AY, APRIL I t th Sponsored by Bayfield Agricultural Society BROERIMMIRMEERERIERARamallimmEORMRIMINIIMM :ng or cult ng and respond rapidly to top -dressing with nitrogenous fertilizers. Its greatest advantage, however, lies in its drought resis- tance where the plants continue growth when many other grasses chase to p•. oduce. Although grass is palatab;e when in a leafy stage, the matur- ing sterns become woody and un- palatable. Therefore, careful pas- ture management must provide for maintaining the grass in a leafy condition. This condition may he 'maintained by careful grazing and/or mowing back the fields when many uneaten stems are ob- served .in the pasture. Orchard grass is sensitive to flooding for prolonged periods and should always be located on areas where there is good surface drain- age to provide for rapid spring run-off. Perhaps the greatest en- emy to maitaining good stands of orchard grass is severe ice -sheet conditions that occur in some win- ters. All varieties of orchard grass so far produa„ed will die under these conditions. Three Londoners Face Charges In Hensall. In addition Gray pleaded guilty to 15 more charges, two of which linked him with a $3%000 theft last year from a Hensall woman Mrs. Alice Jaynt. The third Londoner, Miss Eliza- beth Norkin, appeared two weeks ago to plead guilty to three counts of uttering and false pretenses. The trio, out on bail, was re- rnanded in custody until appear- ance on Thursday in Goderich. Whenever severe winter condi- tions have caused damage to ar- chard grass :•tands, the Canadian bred varieties have been greatly superior to foreign bred varieties in their resistance to winterkilling. Seed production of Canadian bred orchard grass varieties has been greatly limited. However, seed of Hercules, a hardy Canadian bred variety is at present being multi- plied and should be available in the near future.
