The monument was purchased at that time through donations from'; parishioners and others in the community. It was designed by Joseph Cantin, whose father, Nar- eisse Cantin, had entertained Brother Andre in 1917 and 1922, On both occasions he cured many res- idents. Protestant and Roman Catholic alike, of physical ail- ments. Brother Andre healed thousands in Montreal where he established an Oratory which has developed into a large educational institut- ion. From their magazine, "The Oratory", the following article is taken. Brother Andre certainly was not versed in Theology, nor was he a man of learning, yet he was a master in that greatest of all sciences that cannot be found in books --the science of holiness. Since Brother Andre's main topic of conversation was. Our Lord's Passion, God's love and mercy, the mystery of our Redemption, inter- ior life and heaven, he clearly in- dicated that he knew the path of holiness. Brother Andre, so simple of heart, read all about the mys- tery of Christ in the open book of His Pasison. Many were the hours Brother Andre spent making the Way of the Cross. In his official biogra- phy, we find the following narra- tive: "Nearly every evening of the year 1927, an employee of the Or- atory was a witness to these long coxnrnunings with God; Kneeling on the hard floor, near the Com- minion rail in front of the main altar, Brother Andre spent an hour with clasped hands, motion- less, plunged in contemplation. Then he made the Way of the Cross quite unlike our (precipitate and distracted perfor- mance. He seemed to undergo the tortures of the Passion, so con- tracted in pain were his features. He took nearly an hour to go round the church. His robust com- panion had to confess himself out- done by the alder man, and re- mained sitting in a pew." Brother's example fired many of his firends to imitate his devotion to Christ Crucified. Today, 21 years after his death,a group of laymen make the Way of the Cross in common every Friday at the Oratory after the example of their friend. In his work as a healer of bod- ies, Brother Andre often had the occasion to preach the lesson of the Passion. He relieved the suf- ferings of many who came to seek his intercession, but in a great number of instances he failed to obtain the cure sought for. Then he would spend many a minute speaking of the Cross. People still remember to this day his pro- cedure; he would rub his finger on the little medal lying on his desk, close his eyes and pour out his heart explaining the true redemp- tive meaning of pain and sorrow on earth. And though many de- parted from the Shrine apparent- ly no better off for their pilgrim- age, the truth of the matter is that a most important change had tak- en place in their heart. The cross no longer crushed them. Life henceforth appeared to them as worthwhile being taken up and shouldered, heavy though it be, in so close an imitation of Christ's effort in carrying His Cross, And Brother Andre practised what he preached. In the course of his 91 years, he received from His Master a generous share of suffering, both physical and mor- al. By what he suffered more than by what he said. Brother Andre preached the highest truth of our faith: "A Christian is a man crucified•" o - FOR COMPLETE PLANS and IDEAS WE WILL BE GLAD TO HELP YOU F. C. Ka1bt1eisch i Son Ltd. Phone 69 ZURICH.
