Nurses employed by the Society must be graduates of a nursing school of recognized standing. They must also he graduates of a university course in public health nursing and have had experience in the generalized health field. Before they are assigned to a dis- trict office by the Society, they receive a six month in-service training period in orthopaedic nur- sing. In addition to her nursing qual- ities, she must also' have the ab- ility to drive a car, swing an ax and build her own camp fire, pad- dle a canoe and be ready for any emergency she may encounter as she cares for and seeks out Ontar- io's crippled children living in the northern woods and hard -to -get -to places. When the nursing service was added to the expanding program of the Society in 1935 there was only one nurse. Today there are 22 and more expected in the near future. Nursing offices are now located at Windsor, London, Kit- chener, Belleville, Hamilton, Tor- onto, Peterborough, North Bay Kingston, Sault Ste Marie, Ot- tawa, Kirkland Lake, Fort Wil- liam and in the hospital for Sick Children. As well as being in attendance at orthouaedic clinics, supervising the Society's five summer camps. and helping. the government and service clubs make surveys to locate crippled children, the nur- ses spend a groat deal of time visiting the homes of the handi- capped and arranging for treat- ment and follow-up care. CUCUMBERS for the H. J. HEINZ Company of Canada Ltd. are still available MARKET and PRICES Are GUARANTEED For further information or Contract, contact Leonard Dawson, Teeswater {Phone Collect Teeswater 131r3 12b m use. The minds of parents of handi- capped children are naturally full of many doubts and fears, They may riot, for one thing, understand the great importance of carrying out the surgeons orders and that's where the nurse comes in. She ,gives the reason "why". She acts as a go-between and demonstrates to the child as well as the parent the correct way to adjust braces and splints, or how to navigate on crutches or in a wheel chair. She will also have suggestions for ex- tra -mural teaching, recreation and occupational therapy for handi- caps, The nurse has only one goal in life—to rehabilitate the handicap- ped child so as to enable him as an adult to make as nearly as pos- sible a norinal adjustment to the regular life of the community. Without the money the sale of the Easter Seal provides annually, the nursing service of the Society could not operate. The Ontario Society for Crip- pled Children appeals for $750,000 to carry on such departments of its work as the nursing service. There will be 1,600,000 distributed in Ontario. Won't you contribute to this campaign and help these children remove the heavy steel braces from tiny legs before an- other Easter Sunday rolls around? 0 REV. D. A. MaeMILLEN CALLED TO KIPPEN The Rev. D. A. MacMillan. form- erly of Atwood United Church, has accepted the call to St. And- r'ew's United Church in Kippen. i,1r.
