SPORTS DIGEST

RAW DEAL AT LUOAN
The Lions Midgets, who had advanced into the OMHA Midget
. playdowns by edging Tara 6 to 5 in Kincardine were ousted during
the past week by a powerful Lucan team. After defeating a tired
.Zurich crew at Hensall 8-4, the smooth skating refugees from Med-
way High School, although held to a 4-4 tie in Lucan the following
night, won the round 12-8, and the right to enter the OMHA semi-
finals against Gore.
Although they were four goals down at the end of the first
. game, the local boys had the edge in the early part of the second
game and were fighting desperately to whittle dawn the Lucan
margin. However, the management of the Lucan Arena came to
their team's aid and demanded that the last two periods be played
in straight time because the game had to be finished by 9:00 p.m.
But if the game had started earlier (and there was nothing to pre-
vent this) the contest could have been played with the same regula-
tion time intervals used in the game at Hensel]: the previous night.
Regardless of the outcome of the game and the series, this was
certainly an example of poor sportsmnship on the part of the Lucan
arena. officials. Perhaps those concerned should study this famous
quotation written by the late Grantland Rice, dean of American
.sportswriters,—"When the One Great Scorer comes to write your
name, it's not of that you won or lost, but how you played the
game."
ROUND-ROBIN SCHEDULE
This. week the injury -riddled Intermediate Flyers advance into
the WOAA Homebrew "•C" playdowns. They meet Clifford and
Brdssels in a round robin series. The first gagne will be played in
Clifford on Tuesday night. On Thursday night Brussels will play
Zurich in the Hensall Arena. On Saturday night the Flyers will
meet Clifford in Hensall. This promises to be a top-flight series
between these three definite home-brew teams. Incilentally, this
years local team ,although definitely in the red, are not in as dire
a financial state as some of the Zurich teams were in when they
packed the arena. The reason being, of course, a lower budget. If
the season's injury list had not been quite as long the team might
have finished on an even basis, since the only other main expenses
are sticks and tape.
Let's do our part to get the team out of the red by attending
their future games.
EASTER SPECTACULAR
Keep in mind the Pee Wee Hockey Tournament in Goderich
,during Easter Week. Over 80 teams will be competing in what
may prove to be the largest and most successful . Young Canada
Week ever staged at Goderich. The local Pee Wees, who this year
will be sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, will be in there
fighting for the "D" championship. By the way, last years WOAA
Midget champs got their start as a team in this same tournament.
Incidentally, Earl "Duke" Yungblut, who was the organizer of this
team in 1954, has been with this same group of boys ever since.
Congratulations "Levi."
In keeping with the topic of the Goderich Tournament, who
could ever forget that exciting game with Teeswater that went into
the third period of overtime, before a then tiny Don Gascho literally
zoomed•through the Teeswater defense and around their female goal -
tender to smash home the winning goal. The harassed Teeswater
Officials alibied that "Mike" had taken advantage of her while she
was in the process of powdering her nose. Don, since nicknamed
"Mallard," by George "Flubug" Suplat, claims to this day that she
was the best looking goaltender he's ever faced.

Zurich's WOAA Midget Champions
Lose To Lucan In ,OMHA Series
The hockey season for the Lions
Midgets came to an abrupt end
on Friday night, When Lucan tied
Zurich 4-4, in the second game of
their two game, goals to count,
OIMHA. Midget "D" quarterfinals
series.
Playing their fourth game in
six nights, the leg -weary local
kids just didn't have enough steam
to turn the tables on Lucan. They
lost 8-4 to the same team in
Hensall on Thursday night. At one
time in the second game, the boys
were within two goals of tieing
the round, but, in the abbreviated
contest, they could only squeeze
out a tie.
The boys still feel mighty proud
of their first year in Midget hoc-
key, having won the WOAA title
last Tuesday, defeating Tara two
games • to one in the final. Had
they not been forced to play four
games in six nights, the Midgets
probably would have fared much
better in their series with lite
Irish town.
LUCAN 8 ZURICH 4
Lucan took a 3-1 lead in the
first period with Byran Geoffery
scoring the only Zurich goal.
The two teams split even in the
second, with Geoffery scoring his
second goal of the night, and
"Woody" Weida banging in the
other.
In the third period Lucan again
outscored the locals, three goals
to one. Wayne Willert picked up
the final Zurich goal. Only four
penalties were handed out in the
game, three to Lucan and one to
Zurich.
One' of the best crowds of the
season watched the game, which
was played in the Hensall Arena.
ZURICH 4 LUCAN 4
Zurich started out fast in the
first period, and at the 18 minute
mark were holding a 3-1 lead,
on two goals by Bob Johnston
and one by Bryan Geoffery. With
only a few seconds left in the
period, Lucan scored to finish 3-2.
In the second period Gerard
Overholt scared for Zurich and
Neil for Lucan. Paul Conlin tied
the game for the Irish at the
5.20 mark of the third period. Six
penalties were called in this game,
HENSALL 4 MILDMAY 3
Hensel]. edged Mildmay 4-3 in
the first game of a best of three
series for the WOAA Bantam "D"
title.
Bryon Watson scored the win-
ning goal for Hensall with less
than a minute to go in the over-
time session. Harold Jacques
scored twice and Bruce Horton
added one goal for the winners,
0
MILDMAY 8 HENSALL 2
Mildmay evened their best of
three series at one game each on.
Saturday night when they swam-
ped Hensall 8-2, playing before
their hometown fans.
Jack Chipchase bagged both
goals for Hensel'.
four to Lucan and two to Zurich.
About 100 loyal Zurich fans
made the trip to Lucan to cheer
the locals along, but all were
greatly disappointed in seeing only
three short periods played instead
of the regulation time.
Due to poor management on
the part of the Lucan arena eom-
mission, only a little over an hour
of time was allowed for the game
to be played. This was certainly
an advantage for the short hand-
ed Lucan crew, who were nursing
a four goal lead going into the
game.
