BUILDING OUR COMMUNITY—
Gaschos-Oldest Established Business
The oldest estiblished business
in Zurich is now operating under
the name Gascho Brothers, con-
sisting of brothers John and Ed-
win. Gaschos operate two stores,
one at Zurich and one at Drys-
dale.
In 1911 John Gazebo and Wil-
liam Ruby purchased the stock of
D. S. Faust, and operated in the
location which is now Tasty -Nu
Bakery. Three years later Joseph
Gascho, the father of John, took
over Mr. Ruby's interest in the
business, and the firm carried on
under the name of J. Gascho and
Son.
In 1925 the stock and fixtures
of H. Albrecht were bought, and
along with their own stock was
moved to its present location.
Then in 1930 they purchased part
of the stock of the T. L. Wurm
store.
In 1931 the general store at
Drysdale, which was owned by
Joseph Bedard, was taken over,
and the store was operated by
Mrs. Bedard, until 1942, when
John Denomy was engaged to
take charge of this place. Mr.
Denomy is still in charge of the
Gascho store at Drysdale,. after 16
years of faithful service.
In 1944 Edwin Gascho, a broth-
er of John, purchased his father's
interest in the business. In 1946
they built a new store hi Drysdale
across from the old one. Many
alterations have been made to
both stores since that time. New
fixtures have been installed, and
both have semi self -serve grocery
departments. In the Zurich store,
Gascho's carry a large stock of
drygoods, ladies' and men's ready-
to-wear, yard goods, wallpaper and
groceries, while the Drysdale store

How About You ?
A certain preacher, as he travelled, stopped in a
place of business. One of the employees asked him,
"Are you lost?". The preacher replied, "No, sir, 1 am
saved; How about you?". This very important question,

John Gascho can recall quite
well the old fashioned barter ex-

xchange system of doing business..
The store would take in butter,
eggs, dried apples, feathers, po-
tatoes and dutch sets, in exchange
for their merchandise. For years
they would handle 20 to 30 tons
of dutch sets each season.
