NORMA SIEDERT, Few travel folders can boast a more comprehensive and enticing description of Florida than that given by Mrs. Ward Fritz. Her description of its many tourist at- tractions makes us all wish We could have accompanied her on their recent trip. FLORIDA (By Mrs. Ward Fritz) Southermost state .in United States, Florida, is a ;pistol -shaped peninsula. Long narrow beaches along the east coast are broken at intervals by inlets from the Atlantic Ocean, South of Miami, the Florida Keys extend in a chain for 135 miles to Key West. The west coast, deeply indented by bays from the Suwannee River south, .becomes low and swampy where it borders the Everglades The north central region is called the Highlands. Florida has more lakes than any other State and. in the central area, Lake Okeeehohee•, covering 730 square miles is the largest expanse. Host to visitors of all ages in all seasons, Florida offersrecrea- tion to fit every taste in an ideal climate ranging from warm -temp- erate to semitropical. Spectator sports draw crowds: everywhere, boating enthusiasts use both the 1 fresh and salt waters, fresh and salt water fishing are excellent and good hunting for rabbit, fox, raccoon and quail is common. A tourist is amazed with the archi- tecture of the modern hotels and motels and there 1s extensive building projects in many suburbs throughout the state. Africa, USA, is a 350 acre repro- duction of the African Veldt herds of wild animals roaming in a natur- al setting, enhanced by tropic gar- dens, waterfalls and waterways. Safari jeep trains take visitors .a-.. •o -.10* — B.A. Woman's Page Editor) over four miles of roads and a boat cruise on the waterways in the gardens furnishes interesting views of tropical plans and wild- life. Marineland, north of Daytona Beach, and Seaquarium at Miami, are one of Florida's. outstanding attractions. Outdoor aquarium tanks house a large variety of deep-sea life, including sawfish, squid, octopi, eels, sea lions, sharks and porpoise to name a few, Div- ers descend into the tanks to feed these deepsea giants. Through. portholes, visitors may view and photograph the colorful undersea world. Key West, the southern -most city of USA is quite unlike the rest of Florida. The architecture is predominantly Spanish. It is reached by the Overseas Highway and is the longest over -water road in the world; a three hour drive which offers a panorama of sky and water. The drive crosses the chain of keys connected by con- crete bridges, one over seven miles long, another 75 feet above the Atlantic. The town of Key West isa winter and health resort, be- ing the only frost -free city in the United States. Famous Daytona Beach is where beach drivers almost outnumber swimmers. Cars may be driven along the water's edge for 17 mil- es. On the hard -packed sand, Sir Malcolm Campbell, England, set successive world speed records for automobiles. St. Augustine, the oldest city in the nation, preserves to a remark- able degree the evidences of its Spanish origin. Juan Ponce de Leon, in search of the Fountain of Youth, landed on this site and took possession of the land for Spain. Centering around the Plaza 1 OBITUARY Mrs. E. The water is of sparkling transparency. Numerous varieties of fish and turtles may be seen as plainly as though they were under glass in an aquariam. Electrically operat- ed glass-bottomed:boats take visit- ors aver the pools of 14 groups of springs. Another natural spring attraction is situated at Weeki Waehee Spring ,which features a complete underwater Mermaid Ballet. Featured in movies and magaz- ines are Cypress Gardens. Walk- ways lead through gardens border- ed with varicoloured azaleas, bril- liant exotic flowers, strange fruits and blossoms from other lands, South of Vero Beach another at- traction are the McKee Jungle Gardens. Particularly interesting are the orchids, growing wild on trees, African sausage trees, Cath- edral of Royal Palms and many tropical birds and animals. • Jnr► e• - . d ,- — Complete Line of Home Furnishings Veneti n Minds Drapery Track AND ACCESSORIES Cloth Blinds cut to Your Requirements il' q rr v rings TILES — INLAID CONGLEUMS All Types of CA .
