Zurich Citizens News, 1958-03-05, Page 11WEDN1ESDA•Y, MARCH 5, 1958 ZURICH Citizens NEWS SPORTS JJIGEST PAGE ELEVEN By DON O'BRIEN (Citizens News Sportswriter) ;ROMEBREW A SUCCESS? This week the Flyers' meet a tough Ilderton crew for the WOAA Intermediate "C" I-Iomebrew title. Even though the Wild- cats could not defeat the Flyers in four league games, they never- theless can ice a strong "hornebrew" team if all the players are present. The O'Nei1's, Max and Stu, who attend OAC at Guelph, and Ted Collings, who is a UWO student, can play the weekend games only. Even though the local Flyers have not, as yet, enjoyed a win- ning season they certainly have attained success as far as the • development of new talent is concerned. This year Don Gascho, "Red" Theander, Jerome Geoffrey, Dick Bedard, Pat O'Brien and George Suplat, (who, by the way, is now completely recovered from the flu), are having their first crack at Intermediate competition. Hence the Flyers, •who have been playing against "packed" Inter- mediate "B" teams all season, are certainly to be proud of the effort they have displayed. Haw could anyone expect Zurich, as great a hockey town as it as, to compete against teams from towns the size of Exeter, Clinton, Forest and Pt. Edward, especially when these larger towns have .added players from other centres themselves. Although Exeter, the league leader, is playing haznebrew this year, they have the nucleus from their imported "Senior "B" team last year. Clinton is drawing three players from Goderich, two from Seaforth and three from RCAF Station Clinton. Quite a combined population; Eh, what? Similarily Forest, Blackwell, and Pt. Edward are draw- ing the majority of their players from Sarnia. Lucan, as usual, are receiving their players from St. Marys. and London. So don't forget to see "your boys" in action on Thursday :night against Ilderton in the second game in the best three -out -of - five semi-finals for the WOAA championship. * * * )LIONS 1VIIDGETS REACH WOAA FINALS The local Lions Midgets continued their quest for the Midget "IY' championship by defeating Lucknow in a best two out of three series. After a surprising 8-0 victory in Zurich, the boys bad to battle all the way to oust a stubborn Lucknow crew. The final game wasn't decided until the last few minutes when goals :by Geoffrey and Overholt finally sealed the decision. The victors survived two quick penalties during the third hectic period before scoring the two insurance goals. They will naw meet Tara for the • championship, later this week. r :k * STELLAR, SQUIRTS STAMPEDE STRATHROY Hats off to the local Squirts who won two games from Strath- Toy on Saturday. Sporting, their new red, white and blue uniforms, the "A" team trounced Strathroy's best to the tune of 5-0. To add Insult . to the injury the "3" team promptly defeated the Strathroy "B's" 2-1. Gard Block and Jack Bannister, the coaches, and the -Chamber of Commerce, (the sponsors) are to be congratulated for the party 'they have played in building and maintaining minor hockey in Zurich. d: * SPORTS POST SCRIPTS So Fax, So Good— The Whitby Dunlops have, so far, lived up to their press ratings'. in the World Hockey Tournament at Oslo. They defeated the host team, Norway, 14-1, Poland 12-0 and then they edged Finland 24-0. Hence in their first three contests they have scored 50 goals and have only had one goal scored against them. Look Out Dickie— The recent scoring surge of Ranger star, Andy Bathgate, has certainly gained the concern of the loop's leaders, Dickie Moore and Henri "Pocket Rocket" Richard of the Canadiens. This pair, who have had things their own way of late as far as the scoring leadership is concerned, now have Bathgate breathing dawn their necks. As of now Bathgate and Richard are tied, three points behind Moore. Three of Them— Don't be toa surprised if another all -Richard line appears on the NHL scene before the present season is completed. Claude, the youngest brother of Maurice "The Rocket", and Henri "Packet Rocket", is now toiling for the Ottawa -Hull Junior Canadiens. Claude, or as he has been appropriately nicknamed, "The Vest Pocket Rocket", has been nothing less than sensational since the turn of the new year, as he has been pouring goals past opposing netminders in true Richard fashion. Longest Point Stretch— The veteran Tommy Burlington holds the AHL record for the most consecutive games in which he scored a point or more. He went 24 games in the 1945-46 season. By the way, this same Burlington was unable to reach the NHL because of a standing rule—No player can play in the NHL unless he has the sight ot, bath eyes and Burlington played the majority of his hockey career with only ane eye. Harvey Monopolizes Norris— The James Norris Memorial Trophy was presented for the first time in 1953-54. It goes to the top defenceman in the NEL. Red Kelly won it the first season --Harvey ever since. Another Babe Herman Prize— The immortal Babe once complained to a reporter, "I'm no oaf. I'm a serious fellow. Why, I even read books. Why don't. :you mention that sometimes?" "All right," said the scribe. "By the way what do you think of the Napoleonic Era?" Babe scratched his cranium, then drawled, "I think it shoulda :been scored as a hit." W.O.A.A. Bill Wagner scored at the 4.10 mark in the second period, and Kirkland came right back far Lucknow 15 seconds later with his only goal of the night. Bob Johnston and Gerard Overholt each added another marker to shoot Zurich ahead 6-4, at the end of the period. Henderson scored his fourth goal of the night early in the third period to put Lucknow fight back BILL Cochrane YOUR LIBERAL Candidate in Huron asks why were the Conservatives afraid to bring down a budget? VOTE LIBERAL (Published by Huron Liberal Association) in the game. Four penalties for Zurich in quick succession in this period made things look bad for a while, but determination won out when Bryan Geoffery and Gerard Overholt each scored once near the end of the game. Nine penalties were called in the contest, six to Zurich and three to Lucknow. A small free - for all late in the third period livened things up a bit, as most of the players on both teams piled in on it.
