nets through the ice on February
12, and after several lifts caught
a fair catch of Carp, Shad, Mul-
lets and a few trout and pike. He
also got some of the worthless
sawbelly, a fish the United States
Department dumped into Lake
Erie a few years ago, by mistake
for ocean shad. They look much
like a whitefish or whitebass, and
have a rip saw set of teeth run-
ning along their lower body. The
flesh is also a mass of hones.
The herring which used to be
caught in the winter in large
numbers, are nearly extinct, and
after a week's fishing for them
Stanley was lucky enough to get
one herring.
The future looks extremely poor
for fishing. The Department has
closed the fish hatchery at South-
ampton and Pont Edward, which
means Lake Huron will not get
any restocking in the future.
