Fred Dueharme) Due to the absence of Mrs. Val- erie Oantin, St. Joseph, where the Catholic Women's League meeting was to be held, it was necessary to hold it in the Church Vestry. Owing to stormy weather and heavy roads the attendance was not so large, however the month- ly discussion took place as. usual. The meeting opened with prayer and the minutes were read and adopted. The next meeting will be held in March. Mr. Slydon Denomrne of the Drysdale district called on Wed- nesday last with relatives and friends on the Blue Water High- way. Doubles Grants For Hospitals On Capital Expenses In order to assist the hospitals in meeting their capital construc- tion costs, to provide the addit- ional accommodations that will be required when the Ontario Hos- pital Insurance program comes in- to effect on January 1, 1959, and to stimulate employment, the Gov- ernment of Ontario is in most categories doubling its capital con- struction grants to hospitals thr- oughout the Province. These in- creased grants will come into ef- fect on January 1, 1958. It was back in 1947 that the Ontario Government introduced hospital construction grants in Canada. Since then it has con- tinued to pay many millions of dollars annually for this purpose. Subsequently, the Government of Canada introduced a program of capital grants supplementing th- ose made by the Province. The Federal Government has now re- vised its grants upwards. With this announcement of Federal Government increases the prov- invial government is providing greatly stepped-up grants to come into effect on the same date; namely, January 1, 1958. In many instances our grants continue to exceed those made by the Federal Government. The following table shows both the old and th new grants to be paid by the provincial and the fed- eral government: 0 From 1950 to 1957 production of steel ingots in Canada increased from. 3,2987,071 tons to 4,919,386 tons; steel production in 1957 was about 5 percent lower than in 1956. - Banking is sure to be the topic of conversa- tion between these two men. A former Zurich boy, "Bill" O'Brien talks things over with man- ager Jack Bannister in the Zurich branch of the Bank of Montreal which this month is cele- brating 50 years :of banking service to the Village of Zurich.
