Former Bank Employee Recalls
Working In Zurich Bank In. 1908
Jack Veitch, 71 -year-old emp-
loyee of Market Square Branch
of the Bank of Montreal, Lond-
on, reminisces about the year he
spent at the Zurich Branch in
1908, in the following letter to
the editor. Mr. Veitch, who has
served the Bank of Montreal
for over 50 years, works in the
same branch as Bill O'Brien, a
graduate of the Zurich branch.
"I understand that the Bank of
Montreal is now celebrating its
50th anniversary in Zurich, Ontar-
io and I am pleased to say I had
the pleasure of working at the
branch 50 years ago, in 1908.
"The staff at that time consist-
ed of Mr. Harry Arnold as man-
ager, "Pants" Koehler and my-

self. The office was situated near
Rennie's Feed and Seed Store and
fairly close to Williams Mi11.
There was a manager's office, a
general banking office, a good
vault and a strong cash safe, The
second floor of the building was
used as staff quarters and both
floors were heated by wood stoves
(there was plenty of wood on
hand). Hydro was supplied by
Williams Brothers and lights were
turned off at 11 p.m. on week
days, 12 p.m. on Saturdays and
10 p.m. on Sundays.
"The manager, Harry Arnold,
lived in Hensall and commuted
back arid forth by horse and cut-
ter .during the winter months. He
never missed one day during my
term of employment in Zurich. A

come together for prayer on Fri-
day, February 21. The service
for this community will be held
in. the Zurich Mennonite Church
at 3 p.m. Everyone is invited to
attend and participate.

and through this method we tran-
sported our cash to and from the
village. I can always remember
Zurich by the good times that
were had at the many dances and
the friendly hospitality of the peo-
ple."

BRAN MUFFINS
Mrs. Lorne Rader
1 egg
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup sour cream
1 heaping cup flour
1 cup bran
1 pinch of salt
1 scant teaspoon soda
1 heaping teaspoon baking pow-
der
Mix as written, bake 15 to 20
minutes at 400 degrees.
FRENCH DRESSING
Mrs. Ward Fritz
1/2 cup white sugar
4/ 4 cup white vinegar
11/2 cusps Mazola Oil (or other
cooking oil)
1 can tomato soup
1 tablespoon dry mustard
1 tablespoon salt
1% tablespoons Worcester sau-
ce
Mix all ingredients thoroughtly.

% cup butter
4 tablespoons brown sugar
4 tablespoons cocoa
2 eggs
Put in double broiler, cook and
keep stirring until thick, This
takes just a few minutes, then
remove from stove.
Have 32 arrowroot biscuits rol-
led out fine and add them to the
mixture in double broiler. Place
in refrigerator to cool, then ice
with icing sugar, butter, vanilla
and enough milk to make a paste.
Cut 4n bars.
Trousseau Tea
For Kippen Girl
On Saturday
Mrs. E1zar Motisseau, Kippen,
entertained at a tea at her home
Saturday, February 15, in honour
of her daughter, Marilyn. One
hundred and fifty guests attended
the affair from Grand Bend, Bran-
tford, Bayfield, Exeter and Zurich.
Mrs. Mousseau and Marilyn as-
sisted by Mrs. Rochus Faber, the
groom's mother, received the gu-
ests, and Sandra Parkins, Zurich,
cousin of the bride, was in charge
of the guest book. Baskets of
daffodils formed the house decor-
ations.
The tea table covered with a cut -
work linen cloth, centred the wed-
ding cake flanked with silver can-
delabra and white tapers. Pour-
ing tea in the afternoon were
Mrs. Herb Mousseau, Zurich, and
!Mrs. Bert Faber, Kippen, assist-
ing were Miss Bonnie Kyle and
Miss Lois McLellan. Linens were
displayed by Miss Donna Turnbull,
Grand Bend; china, Miss Carol
Fading, Grand Bend; gifts, Mrs.
Jim Parkins, Zurich.
In the evening Mrs. Carmen
Woodham, Greenway, and Mrs.
John Bean, Brantford, aunt of
the groom, poured tea; assisting,
were Miss Ann Sinclair, Kippen,
and Mrs. Tony Charette, Hensall;
linens, Miss Marion Woodburn,
Greenway; china, Mrs. Irvin Ford,
Exeter; gifts, Mrs. Jim Parkins,
Zurich.

Sunday School
Presents 57
Awards To Pupils
Fifty-seven awards were pres-
ented to teachers and scholars at
the Sunday School session at Em-
manuel E.U.B. Church on Febru-
ary16. The superintendant, Milt-
on Oesch and John Gascho made
the presentations. Leonard Merri-
er has a perfect attendance of
18 years. He mentioned how he
enjoys attending church and Sun-
day School and how everybody
should do so, in order to be a
good citizen. The superintendent
commended the secretary, Miss
Ethel Gabel for her work in cam -
piling the report.
