Zurich Citizens News, 1958-01-16, Page 8PAGE EIGHT SP ‘• ,' By JLW.T. are going to make some of the older gang, including Hesse, Doug. and Don O'Brien, hustle to keep uP in the scoring race. * 4' We have some curling enthus- iasts in Zurich now. Ed. Gascho, Hubert Schilbe, John Robinson, Jack Turkheim and Carl Decker have been curling regularly in Hensall, this season. They tell us this is real sport; so if anyone is interested better get in touch with one of these 'five fellows. *4 1' Our Predictions: Montreal .Canadiens will walk away with everything , in the N.H.L. (Even though Boston Bruins are now favorite). Kitchener-W.aterloo . Dutchmen will win their OHA-NOHA Group title. . Whitby Dunlopswill win the World's Hockey Title to be played in Oslo. Clinton Colts will edge Exeter Mohawks for Cyclone League Tit- le. At our Exeter vs. Zurich hockey game we were privileged to have Jerry Olinski, former N.H.L. re- feree officiating. Jerry, who spent several seasons refereeing in the big time is, to our way of thinking, one of the most colorful gents in the business, Like all good referees, he is busy every night of the week. Last Wednesday night he was in Zurich, Thursday night at Hamil- ton, Friday night in Chatham, Saturday night in Barrie and Sun- day afternoon at Maple Leaf Gar- dens. Incidentally, Jerry tells us he refereed the junior games in Tor- onto a couple of weeks ago, which ended in so many fights they thought for a while they would have to call the games off. Oh! for the life a Hockey Re,- feree! * The showing our Homebrew Hockey Team made against the highly -rated Exeter Hohawks was indeed pleasing to all of us. A little more luck here and there might have seen the score rever- sed. It was sure good to see all those fans out; it makes us feel hockey is on its way back to be- ing a top drawing attraction in our local arena. The next home game is on Friday night with Pt. Edward Redmen invading the Zurich Ice Palace to tangle with our own Flyers. Let's see if we can't get some more fans out to this one. You won't be sorry. Watch that kid line roll. Exeter 8—Zurich 5 Playing their second game in two nights the Flyers gave Exeter Mohawks a big scare on Wednes- day night, as they lost to Exeter 8-5. The play was much closer than the score indicated, and only some sensational goal -tending by Baker in the Exeter nets preven- ted the locals from upsetting the powerful Mohawks. Zurich opened the scoring at 3.44 of the first period on a nice scoring play by Gascho, assisted by Suplat. Garvett and Pincombe each scored two goals far Exeter in this period, the single tally cominz from the stick of Rundle. YungliTut and Doug O'Brien each added a goal to Zurich's total. In the second period Sabourin scored his only goal or the game for the Mohawks, with Garvett adding another to give him the hat trick. Exeter held a commanding 7-3 lead at this stage of the game.
