ZURICH Citizens NEWS
,By DON O'BRIEN
(Citizens News SpOrtswriter)
When the Zurich , Lions Ban-
tams defeated Bala at Graven-
hurst, last March, to win the All -
Ontario Ban -tan -1, "D" champion-
ship, the importance of an eleva-
tion system in our minor hockey
set-up was certainly evident.
This same group of boys were
first organized into a Peewee
team in the winter of 1953-54 to
participate in the Goderich Young
Canada Week. The following
year they again spent part of their
Easter vatation playing hockey in
the Goderieh tournament. During
these two years and the follow-
ing year (i.e. their first attempt
at Bantam competition), the teani
displayed only average ability,
but the coaching staff had noticed
a definite improvement in their
play. Then last year with . three
years of experience behind them
the team realized its ,goal—The
All -Ontario Championship trip.
Again this year, with the neces-
sity of a minor system recognized,
the Lions Club, along with the
Chamber of Cormnerce, are organ-
izing a vast minor setup with the
hope that the cold weather will
remain for at least two months.
Bantams
As in previous seasons the Zur-
ich Lions.Club is again sponsoring
Bantam and Midget •teams. As
the majority of last year's champ-
ionship_ Bantam team have been
elevated to the midget category,
Coach Doug O'Brien and manager
Bill Yungblut have a definite re-
building-dob ahead of• them. The
nucleus of • the team is being
formed frofn five returnees of last
year's Bantam team; Dennis Paul
Amacher ingoal, Allen Thiel on
defence, and;'Earl "Cuss" Wagner,
Ron Deicheil and Russell "Hot:
shot" Klopp 'On the forward lino.
In addition Gregory Wilbert wile
shows great promise on defense
and Cameron Witmer a forward
saw action with aensall's Peewee
"D" Champions last ,year. Other
players who have already signed
certificates and those who are
still trying for place on the
team are: Larry Merner, Richard
Klopp, Anthony • Bedard, Ray
Ducharme, Jim Consitt, Robert
Turner, Allan Prang, Andre Dur-
and, Bernie Bedard, Allan Broken -
shire and Jake Yungblut.
Midget
The majority of last year's
Championship Bantam team. along
with their coach, Don O'Brien,
and their manager, Earl "Duke"
Yungblut, have graduated into the
Midget category. Even though
this team was able to win the
Bantam championship last year,
they will have a tougher road to
hoe this season, since this will be
the first year of Midget competi-
tion for most of the players.

Denny P. Amacher, who stopped
about 50 shots during last year's

ChamPionship. The winners will
then continue on in WOAA com-
petition.
Rough Start
On Saturday, January 4, with
only one hour practice under their
belts the Zurich Lions Bantams
and Midgets played Seaforth at
the Seaforth arena. Considering
their lack of practice and the fact
that they were playing teams of
a higher category, both the Ban-
tams and the Midgets gave a sat-
isfactory account of themselves.
The Bantams, after trailing
10-0 at the end of the second per-
iod, fought back to split the only
two goals of the third period. Ron
Deichert smashed home an unas-
sisted goal in the final period as,
the Bantams lost 11to 1.
Up until the last five minutes
the Midget game was a real thril-
ler. A disputed Zurich goal
which would have proved to be
the tying marker and an uninden.
tified spectator on the ice were
the highlights of the game. De-
spite the stellar goaltending of
Denny Amacher, Seaforth led 2-0
at the end of the first period The
second period had just started
when Brian Georffrey slapped in
a rebound from the stick of Gir-
ard Overholt. Bob Johnston also
garnered an assist on this play.
But Seaforth scored again and
the second period ended with Sea -
forth leading 3 to 1.
Midway through the third per-
iod, after Wayne Wilbert's long
drive had bounced off the goal
post, Overholt scored with Wil-
bert getting the assist. This
seemed to inspire the Zurich crew
and about a minute later, Bob
Johnston skated around a 6'5"
Seaforth defenseman to score the
supposedly tying goal. However,
on the referee's claim that the
puck had been kicked in, the goal
was disallowed. This situation
seemed to take the extra drive
out of the boys and Seaforth went
on to win 5-2.
Midget Exhibition Game
Oakridge Acres vs. Zurich.
On Saturday, January 11, the
Zurich Midgets were defeated by
the Oakridge Acres Midgets of
London 5-2.
Lehman with two, Kiib, Cross -
an and Welstead were the Oak-
ridge Acres goal scorers, while
Brian Georffrey scored both Zur-
ich goals.
