The continuous -cold weather has.
made it look like a backward spring
after all. The cold winds and dry
weather is taking its toll on the fall
wheat, and what we reed is warmer
weather and some rain. The farm-
ers are busy with the seeding and the
land is said to be working up nicely.
With the many empty barns the far-
mers would appreciate --warm and
some rain to urge the growth of the
grass.
.1114 MEMORIAM
In loving mernory of David Bender
`who passed away one year ago, Ap-
ra 11th:
Deep in our 'hearts lies a picture
Of a loved one gone to rest.
In memory's frame we will keep it,
Because he was 'one of the best..
Our lipscannot speak of our sorrow
Qur hearts cannot tell what to say,
God only knows how we miss him
As we think of how he went away.

Better Times ,
As we Iooked over the council
minutes of Stephen Township we
cannot help but congratulate that
municipality for being so nearout
of the depression, when we consider
their tax roll; as to date out of ` a
tax levy of $48,139.52, there is only
$365.21 in arrears which is remark-
able for the present condition of the
times, and apparently the tax payers`
must be out of the depression, or the
collector has a special way of gatli•
-
ering in the taxes.

• 'RE€KLESS'.-DRIVERS
.. Hon, T. D. McQuesten, Minister of
Highways has the right idea when
he intimates that punishment for ve-
olation of the traffic Iaws will be
through suspension of driving per-
mits rather than through fines. To
many reckless drivers, fines do not
mean much, but if they lost their
right to drive for some months they
will be likely to pay some heed to
the rules of safety. -Ex.
NATURALIZATION GRANTED
Two applications for naturalization
papers were granted by His Honor
Judge J. L. Killoran in County Court
at Goderich last Tuesday. The men
desirous of becoming Canadians we-
re John Spacek, farm laborer, of
Centralia, and John Heinz, Zurich
farmhand. The men were able to
read passably well, but a few wards
used by the court • _ stumped them.
However, His Honor remarked that
he believed the men would be good
Canadians. John Heinz is from Ber-
lin, Germany and has no desire to
return, being very fond of Canada.
Zurich Junior Institute
The monthly meeting of the Zur-
ich Junior Institute was held in the
Town Hall on Wednesday, April 3.
The business part was discussed after
which Ruth Foster gave.the motto
"Greater Love Hath No Man Than
This, That a Man Lay Down His Life
for His Friends." Annie Coleman
gave a reading entitled "Spring's
Here." Joan Gelinas gave a mono-
logue which was enjoyed by a11, Af-
ter having a contest, the meeting
was closed by singing "The Maple
Leaf Forever," The girls then join-
ed the boys for a joint meeting.
The Thirteenth Bill
The thirteenth power'bill has been
received by the local Hydro Com-
mission and although it has looked
better in by -gone years, yet it is a
considerable improvement to .last.
year when the Zurich system was ask
ed to remit the amount of $127., as
compared to a credit note in 1932.
of $536. This past year we 'will re-
ceive a credit note of $26.31. The
total cost of power and running ex-
pense was $4,582.26; while the rev-
enue was $4,608,57. It must also be
born in mind that the horsepower
rate was raised by three dollars per
h.p. dated back to the beginning of
the year. However, we are happy to
state that with the co-operation of
the consumers, by keeping down the
peak load, the treasury in the bank
is gradually climbing up, and we.
hope to soon see the day when the
killowat, rate will be reduced.
