More Hopeful Outlook Municipal tax collections in Mani- toba were consideraibly better last year than in the previous year, ac- cording to a report recently issued by Hon, D. L. McLeod, Provincial Sec- retary and Commissioner of Munici- pal Affairs. Tax collections in most municipalities will see a further im- provement this year. In the city of Winnipeg, taxes are being paid con- siderably better than last year. The loan companies are finding a narked improvement in collections now. Mortgage loans on real estate are again being offered by one of the largest loan agencies, aad it is ex- pected that others will soon follow. DIXIE PLUG SMOKING TOBACCO FINANCIAL= - .o Silver Continues to Hold Limelight The steady advance in the price for Silver in both London and New York continues to hold the attention of the financial world. Buying by the United States government is still the main factor in the situation and has ead to a protest being filed by the Chinese government against the U.S. policy. They contend that the steadily advancing price for the white metal is hurting their export trade and is depleting their stocks of the metal. Ap- parently faced with huge reductions the government has placed a ten per cent. levy on silver exports and in addition an equalization charge will be imposed on exports which will be equal to the deficiency which may exist between the theoretical parity of Chinese silver exchange with London and the rata of exchange officially fixed by the Central Bank of China. It is assumed that this step was taken to protect the silver reserves of the Chinese banks just as the United States and Great Britain have taken steps in the past to prevent a heavy drain on the gold reserves of their banks. The pros and cons of the Chinese situation are too complicated to be of interest to the average person and it is only mentioned as being one of the factors affecting the general silver market, which is of real interest to many readers. Many mining companies who have silver content in their ores will gain substantially through the higher price for the metal Of par- ticular interest, however, is the facet that, in the Great Bear Lake district, Canada has the only new silver field of importance, which has been dis- covered since the days of the Cobalt boom about 1904-1906. The higher price for silver will undoubtedly lead to more intensive efforts on the part of operators in this area. Work during the past four years has resulted in one producer being brought in while at least two others will be in produc- tion in 1935. That only a very small fraction of the favorable ground has been prospected is a well known fact, but with transportation facilities improv- ing and costs showing a steady downward trend it seems certainthat much more activity will be seen in the district during the next year. The writer has interviewed several engineers and geologists who have spent the past sum mer in the area and their enthusiasm on the outlook is very sincere. Sub- stantial profits have already been made by many on investments made in companies operating in the Great Bear Lake and adjacent territories but if all reports are anywhere near correct, it seems to be assured that they are relatively small to what can be anticipated for the future. Steel Company of Canada Ofiicials of this company are repor- ted as expressing satisfaction over business conditions as they have ex- isted during the past few months. A steady flow of orders is being re- ceived by the company and volume is large enough to keep a substantial part of the plant operating steadily. • Howey Gold Mines Earnings 1 Official announcement is made for the third quarter of the current year.
