HEAVY BEER SALES
Toronto Oct. 17 -Beer sales in
Ontario during September totalled
over $2,000,000, an increase of $8-
)0,000 net over the beer receipts of
September, 1933, according to the
,ta:ement of E. G. 0.lette, liquor
Jommissioner. Drinking and liq-
uor dropped by $171,000 from a
1933 September total of $1,630,000
There has also been a slight decrease
in consumption of wine, both Can-.'
idian and imported, though we have
•ot the figures ,for that as yet, he
;aid. "The figures plainly show the
,eople •aro drinking more beer and
a: s hard liquor, which is what we
loped for," said Mr. Odette. On
,hat he based his conclusion that the

c. At the September rate of beer
ales the total for the year would
climb ;close to ;$25,000,000.

Horse -Shoe Pitching
Championships
Horseshoe pitching, the typical old
farm sport, has lost none of its grip
on rural Ontario and information
from local clubs reaching the Royal
Winter Fair point to a higher level
of attainment and keener interest in
the sport than most old players can
recall. Again the championships of
Canada are to be decided during the
last four days of the Royal Winter
Fair, Nov, 26-29. These champion-
ships, singles and doubles, are the
officially recognized competitions san-
ctioned by the Dominion of Canada
Horseshoe Pitcher's .Association..
They are held under the auspices of
the Royal Winter Fair itself and will
be conducted by a special committee
