The imporance of the work of
Women's Institetes was. brought very
forcibly to the attention, of a large
audience Which .filled the auditorium
of Dungannon United church on May
30th, when the twelve branch Instit-
utes of the district of West Huron
assembled for their annual district
meeting. Sessions held morning and
afternoon were presided over by the
district president, Mrs. Gordon Bisset
of-Goderich, who at this meeting,
was returned to the president's chair
for the third successive year. Inter-
esting and comprehensive reports we-
re .presented by the secretarys of
the branches, which showed that, al-
though the branches are operating
on reduced revenues, their work is
still successfully carried on and a
spirit of opthnism prevails.
HYMENIAL
An interesting weddin took place
at the home of Mrs. Margaret Reid
Varna, on Saturday last when Miss
Margaret Chuter, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Edward Chuter, Varna, be-
came the bride of Mr. Walter Mc-
Bride, Goshen line, Stanley. The
bride, who was given in marriage by
her father, entered the drawing room
at twelve o'clock, to the strains of
the bridal chorus from Lohengrin
played by Mrs. Wilmer Reid, cousin
of the bride. The bride looked char-
ming in a white crepe dress made in
long fitted lines with short sleeves
and long white lace mittens, white
shoes and hose to match. She wore
a wreath of orange blossoms and
carried bouquets of tulips, bridal
wreath, And carnations. Miss Mary
Chuter, twin sister of the bride, act-
ed as bridesmaid, Mr. Erniore Mc-
Bride, brother of the groom, was
best man. Little Mona Reid, cousin
of the bride was flower girl. The cer-
emony took place under, ain arch of
evergreens decked with white wed
ding bells, ferns and tulips. Rev. W.
G. Bulger, rector of Trinity church,
Bayfield, officiated. The bride led the
way to the dining room which was,
prettily deeorated in pink nad white,
The wedding cake looken very attra-
ctive in the centre of the table.. A
delicious dinner was served to 24
gueets, immediate relatives. Irene

Huron County Council
Meeting
On Wednesday June 6th. in Comi-
ty Council the. members by a Vote of
,
•. •
onsored by Reeves. McNabb (Grey)
and Goldthorpe (Colborne) asking
the Provincial Gov. to desist from
building further paved highways in
Huron county on the ground that
the county, at this time, could not
afford the expenditure and did not
wish to increase its indebtedness.The
,discussion was heated at thnes. The
notion: McNabb—Goldthorpe—. that
this council disapprove of paving be -
mg done in Huron county and that a
resolution be forwarded to the High-
ways Department to that effect. The
Vote: Yeas—Archibald, Ballantyne,
DemerPng, Eckert, Elliott,

ingway, Johnston, Johes, Lepier,

The County tax rate for 1934 is
the same as for last year, but is ap-
portioned somewhat differently as
follows: General rate 4.2 mills; Co.
highways 1.2; Prov. highways .6, to-
tal 6 mills. Two fifths of a mil/ is
taken from the Prov. highway rate
of 1933 (one mill) and transferred
to general account. This allows the
wiping out of a debit of $40,000 at
the Bank. The report of the County
Goal as submitted to the County Co-
uncil in session: "I beg to submit for
your information the following re-
port for the past six months: There
have been 45 prisoners committed as
follows: L.C.A. 20; theft 7; contem-
pt of court 4; rape 3; Inland Rev. 2;
assault 2; Traffic Act 2; vagrant 2;
fraud 1; false pretense 1; non-pay-
ment of poll tax 1, We have at pres-
ent in custody, five prisoners Cost
of daily rations per prisoner, /01A
cents." —.T. B. Reynolds, Goaler.
Harry Edwards, Children's Aid In-
spector reported that at present the-
re were three girls and six boys in
the shelter, ranging in age from one
year to seventeen years. He reported
alarming increase in the number of
unmarried mothem. in the county,
havifig recently investigated the eas-
es of' thirteen in one week. Mothers
shold educate their daughters in the
facts of' life, he thought, in order to
assist them to protect themselves. He
elso4hceight • that it would be well
for mothers to confine themselves
more closely to home instead of
playing cards and indulging in gos-
sip. Be was not prepared to say that
dance halls were the cause of the
trouble but was euro that a great
deal of responsibility rested with the
mothers. Reeve Ackert was of the
opinion that public" dance halls were
w
a menace as compared ith the,
home home dances of years ago.
Reeve Matheson asserted that the
bible was $1, closed book today, while
anothet reeve was of the opinion
