SYNOPSIS
Hurried removal of rive orates of Op-
lum from the liner Wallaroo carrying
2,000,000 ponds in gold to Australia --
discovery of a diary dropped by Yuan
Hee See, in the Limehouse warehouse of
Jo Lung, London's biggst fence" --the
murder of Sergeant Norwich of Scotland
Yard --discovery that Yu'an's agents on
the Wallaroo are shadowing EllPen
Kearney with whom Detective Inspector
Dawson Haig is in love—all this occurs
before Eileen is kidnapped when she goes
ashore at Port Said after being induced
by an Armenian fortune teller named
Joseph to accompany Dr. OestIer to the
Mystery Shop of Mohammed. Both
Oestler and Joseph are among Yu'an's
agents. Haig, trailing Eileen, is plung-
ed into the drugged Bath of Feathers
but escapes and gets the drop en Jos-
,eph who topples in the Bath. Haig
takes all his papers, nails the body into
the packing ease intended as his coffin,
using Joseph's credentials, makes his
way into Arabia. Escaping arrest
Oestler disappears from the Wallaroo
and appears at Yu'an's headquarters in
Arable where Eileen first regains con-
sciousness. It is evident as Yuan and
.Aswami Pasha talk that they intend to
capture or sink the Wallaroo. Haig
disguised as Joseph, gains entry to the
house .
He is assigned to outside guard duty
at Yu'an's palace.
Tuan and Aswami Pasha aboard
submarine lure the Wallaroo from her
course with a wireless appeal for aid,
CHAPTER 25 (Cdnt'd)
Dawson Haig went on duty at
noon. His "beat" was some two
Hailes in extent. But in all the vast,
gardens and orchards, pavilions and
outhouses it embraced, he met with
nothing except numbers of those
magnificently proportioned uegroes
who seemed to grow upon the estate
of Yu'an Bee See as freely as palms.
These were the eunuchs to whom
Kid Brown had referred contemptu-
ously, But Haig realized that they
could be very formidable opponents.
The sinister Jackal would soon be
safe in a drug-induced sleep. Four
hours lay before him in which to
Justify his foolhardy- enterprise of
penetrating alone to the stronghold of
the enemy,
One clear fact he had grasped. The
men allotted patrol duty were no
more than watchdogs, probably
selected for their known savagery.
Haig wondered if his predecessor had
been promoted or assassinated; for
his, obviously, was one of the low-
liest tasks, From the great mansion
itself he was excluded,
Burned up by impatience—not dar-
ing to speculate about Eileen—he
walked slowly towards the northern
extremity of his patrol. And a curi-
ous fact obtruded itself. All the eun-
uchs had disappeared!
And now, coming in sight of the
wall which marked the boundary on
the north, he heard again, dimly,
that babel of many tongues ...... but
outside, in the distant tree -bordered
street which led down to the town a..
At one point an old iebbekh tree
overhung the great wall. Haig ran
to it, mounted to the lower-most
branches, climbed higher, and could
see over the wall. .A. straggling pro-
cession was winding down the street
towards the port below! The eunuchs
he could identify by their liveries, but
there were many others who wore no
distinguishing dress.
There had been an exodus from
the great house. Could he take ad-
vantage of it? Along a path border-
ed by almond trees, he walked. Above
everything—he must keep cool. Al-
ways, Eileen came into the fore-
ground—but he knew, and his con-
science cried out, that even greater
stakes were being played for.

A state of the wildest excitement
prevailed aboard the Wallaroo. What
had happened? Had war suddenly
been declared? The underwater craft
bore no distinguishing number and
flew no flag. Then, a smartly dressed
man wearing a. tarbush bad come off
in her boat.
Up in the captain's room, Aswami
Pasha stood by the desk, smiling. He
had boarded the Wallaroo alone, and
apparently unarmed, leaving one
man, a recognizable puglist, on duty
at the ladder head. There was some-

The Egyptian shrugged his should-
ers, "We are both under orders of my
commander in ,the submarine, and
you, at the inonaent, under mine."
"It appears to ane, • six," Rattray
said, turning to Captain Peterson,
"that this thing's an unholy great'

Through a window of the captain's

"You see, we do not hesitate," he
murmured. "The dhow has reached

watch—"I must notify you that you

A boat, packed with negroes; and
manned by four Arab rowers, was
coming from the dhow. The captain
exchanged glances with Jack Rat -

"No alternative, sir—none what-
ever," said the latter savagely. "Pas-
sengers come first, We daren't risk
it."
The skipper nodded, and crossing,,
swung open the door of a safe. He
handed keys to the purser. .
And so, from the bullion room be-
tween decks, two millions of minted
money was removed, taken down the
ladder, and transferred to the i1how.
It was contained in wooden boxes,
each holding five thousand pounds,
and not too heavy for one man to
carry. The work 'was done by a team
of huge uegroes. In a constant pro-
cession, coming and going like magni-
fied black ants, they worked; until
all the boxes were removed from the
Wallaroo.
The transshipment, carried out
with admirable dispatch under the
orders of Aswami Pasha at the head
of the ladder, was completed in Iess
than a quarter of an hour.

CHAPTER 26
In the control room of the sub-
marine Yu'an Hee See received con-
stant messages from an unnamed
source, Len Chow, the second in com-
mand, delivered them:
"P & 0 BENDIGO INWARD
TWENT MILES SOU' SOUTH-
EAST."
"BIBBY LINER OXFORDSHIRE
OUTWARD FIFTEEN MILES
NOR' NORTHWEST."
"AMERICAN FREIGHTER JOHN
CLAY ADEN TO SUEZ TEN
MILES DUE SOUTH."
On recepit of this third message,
Yu'an Hee See spoke into a tube.
"There is too much delay," he said.
"Signal to Ali to draw off in the
dhow."
He studied the scene on the Wal-
laroo. Aswami, at the head of the
ladder, raised his hand signifying
that the order het already reached
him. Three negroes carrying chests,
the last of the consignment, climbed
into the boat. Aswami followed.
Behind a four -inch quick -firer train-
ed on the liner, the crack German
gunner waited and watched. Jo Lung
and the Wasp had other duties.
The boat pulled off to the dhow.

Yu'an Hee See spoke again down the
tube: "Ali is to take both boats in
tow without transshipping the last
load." This order was transmitted to
a man forward on the deck of the
submarine and shouted tp Aswami
Pasha.
Captain Peterson, bare -headed,
grey -faced, stood on the bridge of
the , Wallaroo, It all seemed unreal,
utterly impossible. Even now it was
difficult to believe that the pirates
had been actually on board his ship—
without a blow struck, and removed
that previous cargo under his eyes ....
Yet, had there been any alterna-
tive? Even if the Wallaroo had car-
ried a gun, the fate of all those wo-
men and children below must have
rested upon the success of one shot.
He stood listening to the pulsing
of the auxiliary engine on board the
dhow,—watching the uegroes scram-
bling onto her stern. Then the boats
swung out on tow lines, and the dhow
headed in for the head of that rocky
island near to which they lay. Her
deck was black with negroes.
Suddenly, all signs of life vanished
from the submarine. Came the faint
sound of a bell on the Wallaroo's
bridge; the ship began to vibrate,
but:
"Stand by all boat stations!" the
captain roared. The order was trans-
mitted, in dying echoes, from point
to point of the ship: "Stand by ail
boat stations . . , stand by - . boat
stations . .. boat stations .. "

If You Have That Tired Feel-
ing and Can't Get Away,
This Advice May Help
Along about this time of year,
vitality is at a low ebb and a girl's
reflection in the mirror isn't apt to
please her, Her complexion seems to
be grayish, tired lines appear around
mouth and eyes, her neck is stiff
when she wakes up in the morning.
Something must be done, of course.
No one wants to go on feeling out of
sorts and looking tired and wan. A
vacation probably is the most effec-
tive way of getting rid of "spring
fever." If you possibly can, take a
trip somewhere and get away from
the typewriter, sewing machine,
children or what have you. You'll be
surprised at what one short week will
do for your disposition and your
looks as well.
However, if you're one of those
people who never seem to be able to
take a vacation, substitute exercise,
the right food and some home
beauty treatments for a holiday in
the country or on a boat. They're
inexpensive substitutes and really
quite pleasant.
First, make sure that your drink-
ing .ten glasses of water each day, a
dash of lemon juice when you get
up in the morning. Walk to the of-
fice or, if your work is confined to
the home, take a brisk walk as soon
as the morning's housework is done,
Get ten hours sleep every night and
do some setting -up exercises when
you get out of bed,

be like finding one with five ears."—

The Smart Bedroom Is Done
In Modern or Classic Manner
Naturally you want your bedroom
to convey an impression of peace
and repose. But whether you fur-
nish it in modern style or use some
of the lovely adaptations of period
pieces depends entirely upon your in-
dividual taste,
.A walk through the furniture
shops or departments of any of the
fine modern stores will furnish you
with plenty of inspiration. You will
see fine woods wrought with skilfull
craftsmanship into pieces of rare and
enduring beauty. Pieces that you will
be proud to own and to hand down
to our children: For one of the out-
standing characteristics of the new
furniture is that it is soundly and
substantially made. If the modern.
trend has done nothing else, at least
it has re-established a regard for
value and lasting worth in furniture.
For it is a type of furniture that ad-
mits of no slighting in construction.
Everything must be sound and sub-
stantial.
SIMPLE, RESTFUL DESIGNS
One of the most distinguished of
the modern bedroom suites was
modern in inspiration. The pieces
were made of beautifully matched
woods—the grain of the wood form-
ing an important integral part of the
design. The twin -beds had plain head
and footboards with the grain meet-
ing in the middle to form an effec-
tive pattern. The beds and each piece
in the set were outlined in ebony.
The drawer pulls were formed of ob-
long blocks of highly polished wood.
The large round mirror over the
dressing table was set in a black
ebony base—the top entirely without
a frame. Above the mirror a long
cylindrical light of frosted bless was
fastened giving a clear bright illumi-
nation for make=up. Another dressing
table, also in the modern manner
was illumined by indirect lighting—
the bulbs set into the top of the table,
throwing the light upward and di-
rectly on the face so that there were
no shadows—a very important feature
as every woman who has struggled
with old-fashioned methods of illumi-
nation can tell you.
Low triangular or square stools are
used before the dressing tables. • An
especially notable feature in bedroom
furniture of modern design is the
efficient way the chests of drawers
are designed. Any man will delight in
the easy sliding drawers that open to
display large storage place for mas-
culine belongings.
ADDITIONAL BEDROOM PIECES
If you are doing your bedroom in
the modern manner you'll be fas-
cinated by a lovely chaise longue up-
holstered in soft beige fur fabric. It
is luxurious in the extreme and the
is a small arm chair to snatch. The
pieces are typical of the comfort an
ease of this modern furniture. It l'
severely simple in design yet highlj
effective.
