Pleased With Short Course In a communication received from Mr. Ian MacLeod, Airicultural Re- presentative at Clinton, we Take plq- asure in quoting the following:— "We axe very well satisfied with the attendance at our Short Course and the thought has occurred to me that you might be good enough to men- tion in next week's .issue of your paper the ;two special . speakers that -Will be in attendance on the 1st and 2nd .of ' February. On Thursday, February lst 'Dr. Brown of the -On- tario Veterinary College will be pres- ent and will commee enhis lecture sharp ,at 1.00 o'clock in the after - .as he has to catch the 341 train at Hensall the same afternoon. His lecture will be on parasitic dis- eases of animals, and paying special attention to bot infestation in horses and warbles in cattle. On Friday, February 2nd, Mr. H. L. Ford of the Dominion Live Stock Branch will discuss Swine and Swine Marketing problems. Further information on these two lectures are contained in our Short Course outline,- a copy of which was sent some time ago"' BUSY 'FARMER NEWS • Of the three elements of plant food contained in complete fertilizer mixtures the proportion of nitrogen in the fertilizer should be given sp- ecial attention. If previous cops oi leaf and stem with a poor grain, root or fruit development, the proportion iof nitrogen in the fertilizer mixture sliOuld be materially reduced or eli- minated entirely; if the growth has been lacking in vigor and the plants pale in colour, the soil has probably been low in available nitrogen and a liberal supply of this element will probablyy required for normal de- velopment. Hogs Should Follow Steers Hogs should follow grain -fed cat- tle. They will not only utilize the waste grain but will improve the man are production. Moreover, the pro- fit from winter -feeding beef cattle on grain under present conditions will depend ver largely on. the hogs which 'utilize the : undigested feed from the cattel. The number of 1'ogs needed to clean up after ste Iors dPnends on the rizo of the cattle and the kind and amount of grain fed to them, More hogs :Rev stee. Will thrive if the cattle are fed corn on The cob than if the corn is chu- shed or ground. If husked ear corn is fed to the cattle, each steer will support from one to one -and -a -half hogs. Of ' course, the heavier the lers are fed the faster the hogs. will gain. Young pip weighirur a- out 100 pounds each are best to follow cattle. Apple Prices Itnpro, ite On British Market Tbe market for Ontario apples in Great Britain has improved since the New Year and prices have advanced slightly. Andrew Fulton, overseas fruit rePresentative, (reports that he has been obtaining 18 to 22 shillings a barrel for good quality, attract- ively coloured Baldwins and 15 t 17 shillings for Domestic grades of that variety. Greenings of No.• 1 quality and large sizes are realizing up to 22 shillings a barrel. Mr. Fulton's view is that the pros,- pects. for Ontario Apples on the I3ri- tish market during the remainder of the season are likely to be satisfact- ory for the shippers, and that the On- tario' 'Ben Davis and Stark apples still remaining to be sold will real- ize fair prices if they arrive, as ex- pected, in good condition. Bill of Lading Required Every trucker transporting live- stock for hire is required, under hisP.C.V. P.C.V. license to furnish a bill of Iad ing to the .shipper, reports the Ont- ario Marketing Board in a recent sta tement. Unregulated livestock tru- cking has resulted in huge losses to the Ontario farmer and, with the purpose of abolishing such a condit- ion, the Government bas adopted this regulation. Prior to the advent of the truek, when livestock was generally moved by rail, the shipper interests were protected by a bill of lading,More recently, however, with a great part of ilivestock shipping being effected by truak, the shipper had to depend in many eases on the integrity of the trucker. Too often this results in dispite, with the shsip ; per sustaining a serious loss, (the bill of lading now compulsory; • For those who have used me as their Servant I have gathered untold millions .into their coffers. 1 command the legeons of fashion, mould the styles arm:Ile-ad the World whithersoever I got PadThe buyr, under thnew t .1 sow fielcIS for you to reap a Golden Harvest! ulation, Is now I . c,e rA.
